Job Description

Summary

This role involves coordinating production teams in a state-run program that builds homes, focusing on leading incarcerated workers in construction tasks like plumbing, electrical work, or carpentry while ensuring safety and efficiency.

You'll handle workload distribution, inventory management, customer communication, and financial analysis to keep projects on track and profitable.

  • Proficiency in using ERP systems like Global Shop for inventory and business processes
  • Skills in analyzing income/expense data and adjusting procedures to improve profit margins
  • Strong communication abilities for working with supervisors, customers, vendors, and office staff on project planning, permits, and material procurement
  • Commitment to security functions, including enforcing rules, monitoring safety, tool/key control, and conducting searches to protect staff, offenders, and the public
  • Availability to work 6:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Thursday

Full Job Description

This position is with Homes for Iowa.
In this position you will assist supervisors by performing such duties as instruction of employees, answering questions, distributing and balancing the workload and check work.
You will lead a team of 4 production technician.
Work closed with immediate supervisor regarding issues.
Communicate with customers as necessary to assist with questions and concerns.

Analyze income/expense for each project and adjust procedures to improve profit margins.
You will supervise, manage and train an incarcerate individual crew in one of the following areas:
HAVC/plumbing, electrical, carpentry, windows, siding, roofing or drywall.

Work with office staff in the use of the Global Shop ERP system to oversee inventory transactions and business processes.
Ensure accuracy of inventory through coordination and communication with both the Anamosa business office and production technicians on site
Works with purchasing staff to ensure that raw materials/capital items purchased for use in the home building operation meet established specifications and are cost effective, communicate with vendors to obtain needed goods and service.
Work closely with office staff regarding coordination and planning/sequencing of house builds and home moves, route checks, permits and route approvals.

This position will give highest priority to security functions on order to ensure the safety of offenders, staff and the general public.
Enforce all rules and safety procedures.
Monitor safety in the shop, tool control, key control and searches.

This position will work 6:00 am until 4:00 pm Monday through Thursday.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
  1. Three years of full-time work experience in the direction of employees in one of the following areas related to the manufacture/delivery of Iowa State Industries products or services:
    • Wood Furniture Fabrication: cutting, planing, shaping, routing, gluing, staining, and assembling wood furniture.
    • Upholstery Fabrication: cutting patterns, sewing, stitching, tacking, gluing, and assembling fabric and foam upholstery items.
    • Braille Production: translation of printed documents into Literary and/or Nemeth Code Braille using the Perkins Braille writer and/or computer translation programs, thermoforming, binding, producing raised line drawings.
    • Graphics Arts Production: layout, proofing, darkroom operation, screen-printing, press operation (offset, duplicator, desktop publishing), binding, and cost estimating.
    • Chemical Formulation: mixing, blending, bottling, packaging, and labeling personal care, floor care, kitchen, laundry, and bathroom chemical products.
    • Sign Fabrication: blanking, shaping, and forming metal, wood, and plastic into sign substrate. Application of reflective or non-reflective sheeting to substrate to produce traffic control signs.
    • Warehouse Operations: receiving, accounting for, storing, and disbursing raw materials, component parts, and finished products. Loading, unloading, routing, and dispatching delivery vehicles.
    • Service Center Operation: receiving, processing, recording, and fulfilling incoming telephonic calls. Initiating, recording, and servicing outgoing calls. Responding to and servicing mailed and electronically transferred requests for information; using computers to provide services.
    • Industrial Safety: implementing and administering programs to assure compliance with the standards of regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, etc.) in manufacturing plants. Providing safety training to personnel in industrial plants.
    • Manufacturing Support Services and Production Control: coordinating the disbursement of raw materials and component parts to production shops; scheduling the output of production shops to assure efficient final assembly; scheduling and routing delivery of finished goods; coordinating on-site installation of large projects between production, delivery, contracted vendors, and customers; inventory control; quality control; micro-graphics, or computer based production control and support.
  2. Three years of full-time work experience in the supervision/training of correctional residents or employees in the manufacture/delivery of products or services.
  3. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Senior State Industries Technician or to years of full-time work as a State Industries Technician.
