Summary

This job involves helping manage state forests by handling tasks like monitoring timber growth, fighting wildfires, planting trees, and maintaining recreational areas for the public and wildlife.

Key Requirements

  • Pass initial physical fitness test: 2-mile walk with 25lb pack in 30 minutes
  • Obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal
  • Valid driver's license
  • Pass criminal background check and drug/alcohol test
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs, work outdoors in varying conditions, and handle occasional weekends/overnight travel
  • Knowledge of forest measurements, timber cruising, forestry techniques, GIS, and GPS

The Responsibilities of the Forestry Technician II:

Under general supervision, assists in managing the timber, wildlife, and public on state forest property.

  • Assists with forest management activities including but not limited to timber cruising, timber marking, forest inventory, prescribe burning, wildfire suppression, tree planting checks, wildlife and recreation management, other silvicultural activities and general maintenance.
  • Assists with forest product sale preparation to include establishment of sale boundaries, timber and pine straw sale evaluations, and announcements and awards of contracts.
  • Assists in directing and checking forest management operations such as timber harvesting, pine straw raking, best management practices compliance, tree planting, site preparation, etc. to ensure compliance to contacts and forest certification standards.
  • Performs administrative record keeping activities. Maintain written and/or electronic records of work performed in compliance with forest certification documents and other agency policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required in support of the SCFC mission and strategic goals.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and two (2) years' experience in forestry management. An associate's degree in forestry management or natural resources may be substituted for the required work experience.
  • Must pass the agency’s initial physical fitness test that requires a two (2) mile walk carrying a 25lb. pack in 30 minutes or meet the agency's physical fitness program requirements.
  • Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal.
  • Criminal background check and drug and alcohol test are required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Additional Information

  • Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb, and carry objects up to 50 lbs. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions.
  • Works a standard weekly schedule, 37.5 hours / 5-day work week, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Job may require weekend work from time to time. Overnight travel required to include extensive periods of time (up to 16 days) on large fire incidents in/out of state.
  • Employee must have considerable knowledge of forest measurements and timber cruising. Considerable knowledge of forestry management techniques and practices.

    Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally. Ability to establish working relationship with employees, other agencies, and the general public.

    Working knowledge of geographical information systems and global positioning systems.

  • This position is designated as safety sensitive. This position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace - Drug and Alcohol Testing.
