Job Description

Summary

This job involves planning and running sports and recreation programs for inmates in a federal prison to help them stay active and prepare for life after release, while also maintaining security.

A good fit would be someone with a background in physical education, coaching, or sports management who is comfortable working in a correctional setting and prioritizing safety.

Key Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in physical education or equivalent experience in sports knowledge and organization
  • Master's degree or 2 years of graduate education in a related field, or one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level
  • Experience managing or administering sports programs in community, educational, or industrial settings
  • Knowledge of planning, teaching, or evaluating physical education curricula for secondary or higher levels
  • Experience in umpiring, officiating, or managing amateur or professional athletic events
  • Ability to adapt recreational activities to participants' needs within budget and facility constraints

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements. Basic Requirements: Education: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- physical education.

OR Experience: Experience that provided a knowledge of the physical and psychological factors in individual and team sports, and the nature, purposes, and organization of recreational or competitive individual and team sports.

Examples of qualifying general experience include: Physical education specialist. Athletic director, administrator, or coach in an educational, community, or industrial sports program.

Umpire, official, or manager of individual or t AND In addition to having the above Basic Requirements, applicants must also meet the following: Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate, education leading to such a degree or LL.B.

or J.D., if related. OR Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level.

To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in managing or administering a sports program in a community, industrial activity, or secondary school or college.

Experience in planning, teaching or evaluating a physical education curriculum for secondary or higher academic levels.

Experience in managing or umpiring, or officiating at amateur or professional athletic events, competitions, or games.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may have a combination of successfully completed post-high school education and experience.

This experience must have equipped you with the particular qualifications to perform the major duties of this position as described above.

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

**Your eligibility for consideration will be based on your responses to the questions in the application.** Major Duties:

Designs and implements leisure-time activities in the areas of individual and team sports, and promotes maximum involvement of institution inmates in recreation activities and services through the establishment of leagues, tournaments, etc.

Plans the institution's sports program, to include intramural sports programs and tournaments, as well as additional activities made possible through available resources.

Develops, improvises, and adapts the various recreational activities to the wide range of participant interests and needs, and must meet the limitation of funds, facilities, equipment, and volunteer and other staff support available.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution.

The staffs correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
