The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is searching to fill a Special Agent position in our VICE Special Operations/Interdiction - Upstate Region. The ideal candidate must have a bachelor’s degree, integrity, and a strong desire for public service.

General Responsibility
Under general supervision, participate in the detection of crime and enforcement of criminal laws involving the possession, sale, and manufacturing of illegal drugs; plan and conduct complete investigations and administrative cases, or conduct portions of investigations. Perform tasks supporting law enforcement in assigned counties.

Specific Duties

Conduct Investigations: Initiate cases and effectively obtain material facts and supporting information relating to violations of state or federal law, with an emphasis on the importation and distribution of illegal drugs into the state.

Conduct thorough interviews of suspects/witnesses/victims to crimes or relevant matters.

Effectively manage complex criminal investigations and plans supporting enforcement activity to further the investigation.

Develop, manage, and control confidential informants who provide information and/or operational assistance with investigations.

Prepare accurate, thorough, complete, and grammatically correct reports of investigations, reports of interviews, statements, affidavits, and/or other legal documents.

Present investigative findings to the Court through testimony, as needed. Accurately report statistical information, as requested by the supervisor.

Consult with the supervisor concerning investigations and significant events related to active investigations.


Canine Maintenance and Training: Responsible for daily care, health, diet, and exercise of assigned SLED Narcotics canine. Document any issues and take corrective measures when appropriate.

Schedule and document annual health checkups and vaccinations for each SLED Narcotics canine.

Conduct routine inspections of canine equipment including vehicle, heat alarm, kennels, and other canine items. Conduct weekly training with canine. Recognize and correct deficiencies in the team.

Maintain records of all weekly, monthly, and annual training. Maintain records of canine usage reports.


Perform Administrative Tasks: Prepare and submit SLED daily in time provided by supervisor and enters working time into SCEIS in required time period.

Maintain proper documentation of confidential informants. Maintain an accurate and complete accounting of SLED discretionary funds.

Prepare and submit confidential fund expense vouchers and confidential informant pay vouchers after the use of funds. Ensure case files are up to date and accurate.

Close case files after ensuring all required documentation has been completed.


  • Support Local Law Enforcement: Assists local law enforcement when requested and professionally represents SLED. Independently initiate, develop, and maintain contact with local law enforcement personnel and provides assistance in narcotics investigations.

  • Support Program Areas: Participate in SLED Mandatory Training and other optional internal or external training opportunities that are made available. Maintain SLED issued equipment. Assist other agents within the SLED Narcotics Section, or other SLED Program areas, when needed.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • Must have three (3) years of law enforcement experience.
  • Must currently be certified as a Class I Law Enforcement Officer through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Ability to follow SLED policy and procedures.
  • Must reside in or be willing to relocated to one of the following counties: Pickens, Anderson, Laurens, Greenville, Spartanburg, or Cherokee.
  • Position may require overnight travel and response statewide.
  • Position is subject to 24-hour emergency call.

Qualifications

  • Experience as a law enforcement canine handler.
