The Administrative Services Office is actively seeking a Solid Waste Truck Driver.

This is service maintenance work operating trucks and other equipment used to collect and transport solid waste materials for disposal, reuse and recycling. Work requires knowledge of standardized work routines and procedures in operating vehicles relating to solid waste operations. Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with customers and others and include requesting or providing information, asking questions, or obtaining clarification. Work is fairly routine following established routines, standing instructions, and established procedures and involves similar situations requiring choice of correct procedure. Work is performed primarily outdoors where there are some risks and hazards associated with the collection of solid waste materials, such as exposure to hazardous or contaminated materials. Operates a two-way radio and packer-type trucks, mechanical street sweepers, recycling vehicles, boom trucks, buses, leachate tanker trucks, and other vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 lbs. or more associated with solid waste collection and disposal. Work involves moderate physical activity and demands which include lifting objects weighing less than 50 pounds. Work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines, and the worker is given latitude to rearrange the sequence based on changing situations.

Requirements

  • Operates vehicles to collect and transport solid waste materials for disposal, reuse and recycling.
  • Maintains mileage and service records, such as daily reports and locations of large trash piles.
  • Receives and dispatches routine messages and information and keeps applicable records.
  • Responds to questions and minor complaints from the public and refers major problems to a superior.
  • Checks operating and safety conditions of vehicles, performs minor servicing and reports needed repairs or servicing.
  • Oversees and participates in the cleaning and washing of assigned vehicles.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the routines and procedures in operating vehicles and equipment used in collecting solid waste materials for disposal, reuse and recycling.
  • Knowledge of state and local driving laws.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Skill in operating solid waste vehicles, machinery, tools and related equipment under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to read street guides and maps.
  • Ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to check operating and safety conditions of vehicles and perform minor servicing.
  • Ability to respond to questions and minor complaints from the public.
  • Ability to receive and dispatch routine messages and information.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing less than 50 pounds.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, including rules and regulations.

Additional Information


LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid class B or higher commercial Driver’s license (CDL) during employment in this class.
  • Registration with the Florida Motor Carrier Safety Administration is required prior to appointment.
  • Must qualify for, obtain, and maintain a City of Jacksonville public driver certification for employment in this class.
  • Depending upon assignment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License may be required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this class is six months.
  • This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random, and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville’s Drug Free Workplace Policy (Directive 0401).
