What is the State Land Board?

The Colorado State Board of Land Commissioners manages Colorado’s state trust land assets.

The agency’s mission is to earn reasonable and consistent income over time by managing the assets in a manner that preserves the long-term productivity and value of the land, minerals, and improvements.

The Sustainability and Working Lands Section is responsible for planning and managing all of the revenue generated from surface uses of the agency except renewable energy.

The Stewardship and Ecosystems Section is responsible for all activity associated with the Stewardship Trust, general stewardship of all state trust land, the biodiversity program, and the ecosystem services line-of-business.


Requirements

The position is responsible for supporting ongoing stewardship, biodiversity, ecosystem services and conservation activities on trust lands statewide, and current and new programmatic efforts.

The work includes supporting the protection, enhancement and restoration of wildlife, pollinator, and rare plant habitat, wetlands, and riparian areas.

Activities include supporting a variety of ecological enhancement and mitigation strategies, conducting natural resource site assessment and evaluations, developing recommendations for restoring degraded sites, managing site improvement projects, and conducting site monitoring.

The position helps set goals and targets for the program and works to accomplish them.

The position may make presentations to the Board of Land Commissioners, and works in collaboration with all positions in the unit.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience Only:
Eight (8) years of relevant experience in land stewardship or management, natural resource management, ecological restoration, plant ecology, wildlife biology, or related field.

- OR -

Education and Experience:
A combination of education and relevant experience equal to eight (8) years in natural resources and/or land management, wetlands and riparian management, restoration, pollinator habitat enhancement, wildlife management and/or ecology. Acceptable degrees include Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degrees in biology, restoration ecology, natural resources management, wildlife, environmental studies, or similar field of study.

Highly Desired Skills and Experience:
  • A working knowledge of, and ability to identify, the flora and fauna of Colorado.
  • Experience conducting field surveys, including vegetation transects, baseline surveys, writing reports, evaluating results, and recommending management actions to address field conditions if needed.
  • Experience with GIS (ArcPro), field data collection using handheld devices, and use of GIS data to evaluate sites and projects and prepare management plans and reports.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position
  • Three (3) years of experience in stewardship and/or natural resources work addressing the conditions and functions of the ecosystems found in Colorado.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the planning and implementation of restoration, mitigation and ecosystem services projects for disturbed or degraded landscapes.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with a variety of stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to enhance and restore degraded sites and ecosystems including wetlands, streams, and wildlife habitat.
  • Knowledge of federal and state policies and programs related to the federal Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, wetlands and streams, the Colorado State Wildlife Action Plan, Colorado Parks & Wildlife high priority habitat, Colorado Natural Heritage Program, etc.
  • Knowledge of and experience with grazing management principles, particularly regenerative grazing management practices that improve soil health, rangeland health, and plant diversity.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the regulatory mitigation bank processes, and voluntary carbon and biodiversity markets.
  • Experience with photographic documentation of landscape features and conditions.
  • Good written and oral communication with the ability to convey information to others effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently, yet also as a team player, proactively helps others.
  • Confidence working alone in the outdoors.
  • Comfortable driving on two track roads, ranch roads, and 4WD roads.
  • Project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Colorado residency is required at the time of application.

  • A current and valid Driver's license is required for operating a state vehicle and travel is anticipated.
  • Must be willing and able to occasionally exert up to 20 lbs. of force to move objects
  • Willingness and ability to travel across Colorado to:
    • Independently conduct property inspections and monitoring of natural values on foot or occasionally using OHVs. In some cases, properties are very rugged and difficult to access.
    • Navigate to and around remote properties on foot across uneven, variable terrain for several miles at a time and up to 12,000 feet in elevation
    • Attend meetings in other state offices and group meetings held around the state.
