Key Requirements

  • At least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED
  • Current Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic Certification or National Registry Paramedic Certification
  • Alternatively, EMT-Basic Certification plus completion of an approved Dallas Fire-Rescue educational program within the last five years, and either 45 semester hours of college credit (C average or better) or passing TSIA scores (Math 950+, ELAR 945+ with essay 5-8) within the last 12 months
  • Honorable or uncharacterized military discharge if applicable, with required DD214 or Statement of Service documents
  • Qualified to drive a motor vehicle in Texas with demonstrated safe driving habits
  • Pass a physical ability test administered by Dallas Fire-Rescue Department
  • Attach copies of certifications, transcripts, TSIA scores, and military documents with application (no resumes or cover letters)

Full Job Description

The Single Function Paramedic (SF-PM) is a non-firefighter position that provides ALS care and transport of patients in the Dallas Fire-Rescue EMS system SF-PM may deliver expanded role emergency medical services such as emergency incident rehabilitation, mobile integrated healthcare, and injury reduction/prevention programs.

The SF-PM is required to perform conscientiously, proficiently and as a part of a two-person team at any and all assignments and duties.

The SF-PM is responsible for recognizing the importance placed on activities by the public and for tactful and respectful treatment of citizens.

Qualifications Applicants for trainee single function paramedic officer must:(1) be at least 18 years of age on the date the civil service exam is given;(2) have a high school diploma or GED;(3) for any completed military service, a designation of honorable or uncharacterized discharge as indicated on separation documents provided by the military;(4) have demonstrated safe driving habits and be qualified to drive a motor vehicle in Texas; and(5) pass a physical ability test administered by Dallas Fire-Rescue Department; and(6) meet one of the following qualifications:(A) possess a current Texas Department of State Health Services Paramedic Certification or a National Registry Paramedic Certification; or(B) have successfully completed an approved Dallas Fire-Rescue Department sponsored educational program or partnership within five years of applying to the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department; possess a current Texas Department of State Health Services EMT-Basic Certification or a National Registry EMT-Basic Certification; and at least one of the following: (1) have at least 45 semester hours of college credit with a C average or better from an accredited college or university; or(2) have received a passing score on the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) within the last 12 months.OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Military discharge status must be honorable or uncharacterized (if applicable).Must be at least 18 years old.No felony convictionsNo class A misdemeanor convictions within the last five (5) yearsNo class B misdemeanor convictions within the last two (2) yearsNo more than four (4) class C misdemeanor convictions within the last ten (10) yearsMust not be under criminal investigation during the application processMust not currently be on probation for DWI or other traffic offensesMust not have any outstanding traffic warrants or pending citationsMust not have committed or have been convicted of driving with a suspended license within the last 12 monthsMust not be on probation for any crime at the time of application.Must pass physical abilities test to be administered by the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department Must possess the physical/medical health to adequately perform the duties of a Single Function ParamedicONLINE EXAM DESCRIPTION:The online exam covers the following topics:Medical ProofreadingMedical TerminologyReading ComprehensionSentence ClarityMathematicsMap Reading Additional Information Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesAbility to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees, all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees, and the general public.Ability to competently render both emergency pre-hospital care and care in connection with inter-facility transportation.Ability to maintain compliance with all safety requirements and applicable protocols.Ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and bystanders.Ability to safely operate and maintain all equipment and tools relevant to position.Ability to proficiently use maps and routing software to minimize call response time.Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with other healthcare professionals.Ability to write clearly and efficiently and accurately document patient care and information.Ability to perform responsibly and act as team leader during management of a scene.
