Job Description

Summary

This job involves creating, installing, and maintaining signs for military facilities, using specialized tools and software to design graphics and paint markings on roads and buildings, while also driving vehicles to transport materials.

Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Competitive Service Positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This is a PERMANENT position as a Sign Painter Motor Vehicle Operator (MVO) with the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Jackson, SC.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Sign Painter (Motor Vehicle Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision.

I can apply a variety of graphic arts techniques, including freehand and mechanical lettering, and use printers/software, such as Roland LEJ-640FT and Roland XC-540 printers with Corel Draw, Roland Versa Works and Adobe Illustrator software, to produce signs, posters and displays; embellish signs, displays or doors with insignia, drawings, fancy script, shading, and pin stripes; apply pressure or heat sensitive reflective sheeting for reflective signs; follow work orders; blend and mix various pigments, primers and thinners to produce the colors desired.

I can construct wooden frames and fabricate signs and mounting supports using carpentry tools such as a saw, drill press, planner and router.

I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Engages in extensive standing, walking, kneeling and bending.

Lifts and carries heavy items weighing up to 60 pounds such as pipe signposts, Sakrete, metal sheeting and large signs. Working Conditions: Works in a shop with adequate lighting and ventilation.

There is exposure to harmful fumes from chemicals in paint, danger of injury from traffic when painting traffic signs, and the possibility of falls from ladders when painting signs on buildings or painting installed signs.

Driving is done in all types of traffic situations and weather; there is the possibility of serious accidents and cuts, bruises, and broken bones while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles.

Is exposed to a variety of weather conditions, dust and dirt while performing outside duties. Major Duties:

  • Design and/or fabricate signs using printers/software, such as Roland LEJ-640FT and Roland XC-540 printers with Corel Draw, Roland Versa Works and Adobe Illustrator software, for signage and applications on surfaces, including metal and glass.
  • Prepare, layout and paint crosswalks, no parking zones, parking areas and directional arrows, using rollers, brushes, and/or spray applicators.
  • Maintain various signs post-wide, including installation and removal, straightening, securing, and painting signposts.
  • Operate automotive equipment up to 1 ton to transport supplies and equipment to on-post work sites.
