Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a shipwright to build and maintain equipment for dry-docking submarines, such as cradles and blocks, while ensuring vessels are properly aligned and supported during repairs.

It requires hands-on skills in fabricating wooden structures, reading plans, and using surveying tools to assist in submarine refits at a naval facility.

A good fit would be someone with practical experience in woodworking or construction trades, who can work independently and enjoys technical, outdoor work in a team setting.

  • Ability to report on work progress, problems, and resource needs, plus perform quality inspections

Full Job Description

You will serve as a SHIPWRIGHT in the MATERIAL HANDLING AND BERTHING BRANCH, SHIPWRIGHT SHOP of TRIREFFAC KINGS BAY.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION Ability to build and maintain submarine drydocking equipment.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, instructions, specifications, and docking worksheets to perform tasks within the shipwright trade.

Ability to fabricate a variety of wooden articles and equipment, including shoring, cribbing, wedges, chart tables, work benches, plaque boards, and other shipwright-related items.

Ability to possess a working knowledge of trade equipment, including transits, theodolites, surveyor's levels, and laser beam equipment.

Ability to build and position cradles, hull blocks, bilge blocks, and other structures used to dry dock vessels.

Ability to construct staging and scaffolding for elevated work, such as sandblasting, painting, and shaft removal.

  • You will build and position supporting cradles for dry docking submarines.
  • You will establish reference points above water level for aligning submarines over blocks when it enters dry-docks.
  • You will report to the supervisor on work progress, technical and personnel problems, material, and manpower requirements.
  • You will fabricate, install, and repair a variety of materials to support the refit of submarines.
  • You will sight reference points to keep rope-handling personnel informed of the submarine’s alignment.
  • You will perform a variety of tasks to support work operations while submarine is in dry-dock.
  • You will provide quality assurance inspection of sound tiles along with the restraining/constraining layers and metal studs.
