Job Description

Summary

This job involves overseeing the repair, overhaul, and modernization of Navy ships to ensure they meet safety standards, contractual requirements, and operational readiness.

You'll inspect work sites, review contractor proposals, monitor costs, and recommend fixes for any issues.

Full Job Description

You will serve as a SHIPBUILDING SPECIALIST in the WATERFRONT OPERATIONS DIVISION of SOUTHWEST REGIONAL MAINTENANCE CENTER.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing inspections and planning evaluations of ship overhaul, repair or modernization to determine compliance and quality of contractual specifications or requirements.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will perform the specification planning to include estimating and material sourcing, evaluations, surveillance, and monitoring of all repairs, overhauls, alterations and conversions of surface and support vessels.
  • You will carry out Navy ship maintenance policies to ensure material and operational readiness.
  • You will plan and coordinate on-site reviews for the evaluation of personnel protection/prevention and safety program compliance with established procedures, contracts and specifications.
  • You will make shipboard safety inspections and make recommendations to correct unsafe conditions.
  • You will use output of contractor systems and procedures for cost estimating, labor and overhead, budgeting, purchasing and resource planning.
  • You will review and evaluate contractor proposals to provide input or negotiate labor and material costs.
  • You will monitor contractor cost control systems during contract performance and recommend cost approval or disapproval or negotiate corrections.
  • You will conduct technical advisory reviews of contract specifications to evaluate contractor estimates.
