Full Job Description

You will serve as a Ship Propeller Finisher in the Machine Shop Branch (1440.2), Production Division (1440), Naval Foundry & Propeller Center (NFPC) (1400) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: Grinding, polishing, and metal finishing techniques.

Interpreting design instructions both written and verbally. Selecting proper metal removing equipment to properly complete work and hold required tolerances.

  • You will review blueprints, sketches, drawings, and model of parts or other work specifications for work assignments.
  • You will determine efficient work procedures which include proper machine tools, attachments and sequence of machining operations.
  • You will be responsible for laying out work, computations and dimensions.
  • You will calculate the reaction of specific metals to changing in temperature, and applications of stress during welding and bending procedures.
  • You will utilize oral and written instruction to establish trade practices, processes and procedures.
