This temporary role involves assisting the top leadership of the Department of Justice's environmental division by handling high-level litigation, policy decisions, and team supervision related to protecting the environment and natural resources.
It focuses on enforcing laws against polluters and defending the government in court cases about land, wildlife, and energy issues.
A good fit would be a senior DOJ lawyer with strong leadership skills, deep knowledge of environmental laws, and experience managing complex legal teams.
The Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) is responsible for bringing cases against those who violate the nation's environmental laws as well as defending the federal government in litigation arising under a broad range of environmental statutes.

For this position, the following Mandatory Technical Qualifications (MTQs) have been established and should be addressed within the resume application.
MTQ 1: Demonstrated expertise in federal environmental and natural resources statutes and regulatory frameworks, including the ability to interpret, implement, and defend complex statutory schemes; oversee high-profile civil and appellate litigation; and provide strategic legal counsel on matters involving national environmental policy, public lands, wildlife, energy development, and natural resources matters.
MTQ 2: Demonstrated experience leading large, multidisciplinary legal teams in complex environmental and natural resources matters, including setting litigation strategy, managing risk in cases with significant policy and fiscal implications, coordinating with stakeholder agencies at both the local and national level and advancing Administration priorities consistent with statutory and regulatory authorities.
Major Duties:
This temporary Detail opportunity is located in the Office of the Assistant Attorney General (AAG) for the Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD), headquartered in Washington D.C.
The incumbent works closely with the AAG on litigation and policy matters, implements major Administration priorities, supervises assigned Sections, helps develop Division policies, and participates in overall Division management.
In the absence of the AAG and Principal Deputy, the incumbent assumes full responsibility for Division operations.
Primary responsibilities include but not limited to: Representing the AAG in contacts and negotiations with heads of other departments and agencies, members of Congress and representatives and counsel for defendants with respect to all matters under the jurisdiction of the Division.
Reviewing legal instruments such as briefs, recommendations for or against appeals, pleadings, and offers in compromise, proposed by the various Section Chiefs and trial attorneys, and approves or disapproves such actions.
On particularly controversial or policy matters, the DAAG confers with and advises the AAG.
Assisting the AAG and Principal DAAG in the overall supervision and direction of the staff in the Division and United States Attorneys and their assistants in the conduct of Division work.
Represents the Division in discussions and negotiations with officials of other internal DOJ stakeholders as well as external to the agency to determine the direction of environmental and natural resources litigation.
The DAAG leads and actively participates in cases of exceptional significance involving complex and novel legal issues that establish precedent for other Division litigation, overseeing matters from inception through briefing and oral argument before the Supreme Court of the United States.
Advising on policy matters, cases establishing precedents, strategy, and tactics to be employed in the preparation of trial of cases, and general administration with the object of determining methods of procedure and action to be taken in the conduct of litigation.
