About the Division: Seattle Parks and Facilities Maintenance Division performs maintenance at over 25 miles of boulevards, 465 parks, including 26 community centers, 8 indoor swimming pools, 2 outdoor (summer) swimming pools, 4 environmental education centers, 2 small-craft centers, 4 golf courses, and an outdoor stadium.

We place strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service to the public, clients, and staff to ensure public safety and enjoyment while they are at SPR facilities and parks.


Seattle Parks & Recreation’s Facilities Maintenance Division is seeking a Senior Painter to join our team.

This position leads, schedules, and coordinates the work of painters, structural painters, and helpers while also performing journey-level painting as part of ongoing preventive maintenance and routine upkeep of Parks buildings, facilities, equipment, and furnishings.

The role requires strong technical expertise in painting methods, materials, surface preparation, and safety practices.

Senior Painters train staff in updated procedures and safety standards, select appropriate materials and techniques, and prioritize and coordinate the work of assigned crews.

The position demands sound judgment, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently across multiple sites while collaborating with maintenance staff, trades, and City personnel to ensure projects are completed efficiently.

We are currently recruiting for One (1) regular, benefited position to primarily work on the 3rd shift between the hours of 8:30 PM and 7:00 AM., on a 4 day, 10-hour shift.

Requirements

  • Lead, schedule, and coordinate the work of other painters, structural painters, and helpers.
  • Participate as a member of a paint crew by performing activities which include mixing and matching paint; surface preparation, application of paint and other protective coatings such as toxic finishes, sealants, epoxies, etc., to buildings, equipment, fixtures, and furniture using brush, roller, and spray methods.
  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding, remove, or cover objects, clean work areas, and maintain brushes, rollers, spray, and other equipment.
  • Review work orders in advance and develop a nightly work plan that accounts for staffing, equipment availability, and project deadlines.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of paints, coatings, solvents, tools, and consumables to prevent delays when vendors and supply partners are closed.
  • Match new and old wood finishes; marbleize or glaze wood; tape and patch sheetrock or wallboard; paint parking and court lines; and install parking buttons on facilities' property.
  • Train and evaluate others in new work procedures and methods, safety standards, toxic chemicals, rigging scaffolding, staging, surface preparation and protective coatings.
  • Maintain a variety of records concerning labor and materials costs, job requests, trouble call requests, etc.
  • Maintain strong situational awareness, identifying safety risks such as spills, damaged surfaces, or security concerns.
  • Inspect, monitor, and evaluate contract paint work on City-owned buildings.
  • Estimate time, material costs, requisitions, shop materials, and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and attend meetings.
  • Maintain job and shop records.
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of two years journey-level painter experience and the ability to lead the work of others (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

License, Certification, and Other Requirements:

  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • Normal color vision is required.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Other:

  • May be required to work on call (additional compensation is provided for this work)
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Work at heights on ladders or scaffolding.
  • Frequently required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
  • May work near heavy equipment.
  • Required to work near energized equipment.
  • May work in confined spaces.
  • Dependent on business needs, candidates may be required to obtain a respirator clearance fit test.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Three years’ experience supervising crews of five or more employees.
  • Three years’ experience planning and estimating material and labor costs.
  • Three years’ experience reading and interpreting construction plans, drawings, and specification documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively plan, organize, and prioritize painting projects in advance, ensuring all required materials, supplies, tools, and equipment are identified and secured before work begins.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks, aligning them with departmental needs.
  • Three years’ experience with preventative maintenance inspections and program implementation
  • HAZWOPER, Lead/Asbestos Renovator/Worker/Supervisor/Inspector certification, etc.
  • Be highly motivated and able to work as a team member in a demanding work environment, meeting tight deadlines.
  • Experience coordinating work with both internal and external work groups such as skilled trades, contractors, other maintenance groups, etc.
  • Experience making decisions regarding the selection of appropriate materials and methods to perform journey-level painting work in a commercial setting.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to use standard office software and work order/asset management systems for tasks such as record-keeping, reporting, and communication.
  • Competence in maintaining clear and comprehensive written records.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate maintenance activities, convey operational needs, concerns, and procedures.
  • Exhibit a high level of proficiency in verbal communication to convey information effectively and professionally.
  • Experience in interacting with the public coupled with a high level of proficiency in customer service.
  • Experience maintaining multiple municipal or large commercial facilities.

Additional Information

Compensation:

This position is part of the 2-Step Compensation program; The full salary range for this position is $50.06 (Step 1) – $51.99 (Step 2) hourly.

Union Information:

This position is represented by Painters District Council #5 and is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
