Summary

This job involves designing, installing, and maintaining the physical cabling systems—like copper and fiber-optic wires—that connect networks across county buildings, data centers, and remote sites to keep everything running smoothly and securely.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in network infrastructure who enjoys troubleshooting problems, working with teams and vendors, and ensuring everything meets safety and quality standards.

It's a temporary role lasting about three years, ideal for detail-oriented tech experts who can handle both planning and practical fieldwork.

Key Requirements

  • Design and oversee installation of structured cabling systems, including copper (Cat6/Cat6A) and fiber-optic (single-mode and multimode) infrastructure

King County Information Technology (KCIT) is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to support the design, installation, maintenance, and lifecycle management of the County’s structured cabling and physical network infrastructure. This position is responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and compliance of enterprise copper and fiber-optic cabling systems across County facilities, data centers, and remote sites. Responsibilities include adherence to industry standards, coordination with vendors and contractors, physical infrastructure documentation, and support of network connectivity through high-quality cabling design and implementation.

Requirements

• Design, plan, and oversee the installation of structured cabling systems, including copper (Cat6/Cat6A) and fiber-optic (single-mode and multimode) infrastructure in offices, data centers, and remote facilities.
• Ensure all cabling installations comply with applicable standards and codes, including TIA/EIA, ANSI, ISO/IEC, NEC, BICSI, and King County physical infrastructure standards.
• Perform site surveys, pathway assessments, and space planning for cable routing, telecommunications rooms, equipment rooms, and data centers.
• Coordinate and manage cabling vendors and contractors, including reviewing designs, statements of work, installation practices, test results, and as-built documentation.
• Perform hands-on installation, removal, labeling, termination, and positioning of network cabling, racks, patch panels, cabinets, and related infrastructure as required.
• Support data center cabling activities, including fiber distribution, cross-connects, equipment moves/adds/changes, and capacity planning.
• Conduct fiber-optic and copper testing, certification, and troubleshooting using industry-standard test equipment; analyze results and remediate deficiencies.
• Maintain accurate documentation, including cable records, labeling schemes, floor plans, pathways, and connectivity diagrams.
• Troubleshoot physical layer connectivity issues affecting network services and collaborate with network engineering teams to resolve end-to-end service problems.
• Act as a liaison between KCIT, facilities, construction teams, vendors, and service providers to resolve complex cabling and infrastructure issues.
• Assist with physical security measures related to network infrastructure, including secure pathways, cabinet access, and audits.
• Create and maintain standard operating procedures, design standards, and technical documentation related to structured cabling.
• Enter, update, and manage work requests and incidents using the IT Service Center ticketing system; document actions taken and decisions made.
• Follow County security processes and ensure compliance with IT and facilities policies, standards, and guidelines.
• Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, providing high-quality customer service.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Five years or more experience in an IT or telecommunications role with a strong focus on structured cabling and physical network infrastructure.
• Three years or more experience designing, installing, or managing enterprise copper and fiber-optic cabling systems.
• Experience with fiber-optic technologies, including single-mode and multimode fiber, splicing concepts, and optical testing methodologies.
• Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, cabling schematics, architectural plans, and technical specifications.
• Experience coordinating and overseeing cabling vendors and contractors in an enterprise environment.
• Experience supporting data center cabling infrastructure.

Desirable Qualifications

• BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD)
• BICSI Technician (TECH) or Installer (INST1 / INST2)
• ETA Fiber Optic Installer (FOI) or Fiber Optic Technician (FOT)
• FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT)
• Manufacturer certifications (e.g., CommScope, Panduit, Corning, Leviton)
• Experience with structured cabling test equipment (e.g., Fluke Networks certification/testing platforms)
• Data Center infrastructure experience (TIA-942)
• Network fundamentals knowledge (CCNA-level or equivalent experience)

Additional Information

Hybrid Work: KCIT works in a hybrid model, with days in the office as well as telecommuting. The ratio of remote to onsite work will be dependent on business needs and is subject to change. The primary onsite location is the Chinook Building, 401 5th Ave, Seattle, WA 98104.

Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely.

The individual selected for this opportunity will join an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work as we transition to the department's hybrid environment.

Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.

Work Schedule: The normal workweek for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position will participate in After Hours Support as needed. Alternative work schedules may be considered.
