The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County.

We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild.

If you are looking for a new career that will directly benefit the population of LA County, this may be the opportunity for you.The Department of Public Works is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Senior Engineering Geology Assistant vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster.Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance.

This assessment will be weighted 100%.Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Senior Engineering Geology Assistant.

Requirements

A Senior Engineering Geology Assistant is responsible for a combination of the following job functions:

  • Analyzes and solves geological problems concerned with the attitude and depth of seismic layers; determinations of the volume of material between planes where differing densities, masses and lubricating characteristics must be integrated; and the mathematical description of stereonets.
  • Conducts tests, such as water flow, pressurization, dye tracer and conductivity measurements in conjunction with exploratory drilling to monitor changes to earth in the formation area of dams.
  • Conducts exploratory investigations directed toward determining geological factors such as earth porosity and flow strata effecting the flow of groundwater and to trace sources of ground water pollution.
  • Analyzes boring samples, and based upon identification of characteristic mineral and/or microscopic animal remains, determines key horizons necessary to the design and modification of salt water intrusion barriers.
  • Directs the drilling of exploratory wells and the analysis of rock and soils samples.
  • Plans for and carries out Phase I and Phase II environmental site investigations.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

OPTION I: One year of experience as an Engineering Geology Assistant*.

OPTION II: One year of engineering geology experience investigating, analyzing and making recommendations for the solution of geological problems encountered in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of architectural and engineering structures.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

You MUST meet the requirement(s) in order to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class 3 - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*To qualify, applicants must have County status as an Engineering Geology Assistant as evidenced by holding such payroll title in the County of Los Angeles Public Works for the required period of time. No out-of-class experience will be accepted.

EXAM CONTENT:
During your initial work period, the appointing department will evaluate your performance. Those who achieve a passing score on this evaluation will be considered for permanent appointment.
