In this position, you will utilize established engineering principles and design standards to uphold project quality by meticulously reviewing and approving various design submissions.
Your role will require you to apply sound engineering judgment to evaluate existing site conditions that could impede adherence to current PennDOT specifications and standards.
Furthermore, you will draw upon your expertise to recommend safety improvements for integration into design projects.
As the head of the bridge design team, you will oversee the preparation, verification, and assessment of bridge plans and specifications.
Your duties will also encompass researching, implementing, and promoting the adoption of modern technologies to develop safe and maintainable bridge designs.
Effective communication and collaboration, both internally and externally, will be crucial in defining clear scopes of work, ensuring that all stages of project design are cohesively integrated.You will be responsible for creating schedules and distributing work assignments that maximize resource efficiency, ensuring that bridge replacement projects are completed on time and within budget.
It is vital to submit Hydrology and Hydraulics (H&H) applications to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) well ahead of schedule—specifically, at least four months prior to the plan checking date milestone—to align with letting dates.
Additionally, you will prepare cost estimates to support the latest departmental initiatives, including scoping and design field views.
You will also need to submit Type, Size, and Location submissions six months before the plan checking date milestone for all necessary projects.
Coordination with the roadway Project Manager will be essential to secure funding and to request surveys and borings by November for all projects with preliminary engineering funding planned for the upcoming year.
Finally, you will ensure that the environmental footprint is submitted by the milestone date on the letting schedule and that all project documentation is archived electronically, including design comparisons and final reports.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time upon successful completion of probationary period.
In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.
If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Montoursville. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.
