Summary

This job involves working as a security assistant at a U.S.

About the Position: Serve as a Security Assistant (Office Automation) with the Directorate of Emergency Services on Fort Riley, Kansas.

Specialized Experience GS-5: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Reviewing documents to grant visitor access; 2) Using an automated database to maintain information; and 3) Utilizing office automation software to assist with generating correspondence such as: reports, visitor passes or identification badges.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Time in Grade Requirement: Advancement to positions up to GS-5.

Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-5 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.

Major Duties:

  • Screens all employees, visitors, consultants, and contractor personnel daily, exercising patience, discretion, and diplomacy to determine status of an individual and reason for and location of visit.
  • Provides authoritative guidance and information on security regulations and procedures, exercising sound judgment and discretion in response to telephone and in-person security inquiries.
  • Searches general administrative and security files for information requested by local security and law enforcement agencies and exchanges information of interest with authorized intelligence and investigative personnel.
  • Operates ancillary equipment such as a laminating press, hole punch, trimmer, and installation identification machines.
  • Provides office automation support to the Security Office by providing word-processing, database mgt, email, and related functions in support of the staff.
