Full Job Description

Eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) a student loan payment reimbursement program.

Must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office Recruitment or Relocation Incentive: Authorized for a highly qualified candidate.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.

Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.

Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.

Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: 1.

Completion of integrated Vascular Surgery residency or fellowship 2. Board Certification preferred 3.

While most tours of duty are scheduled during the day, the possibility of "on call" and working evenings, nights and weekends does exist.

"On call" and shift changes, will be considered based on patient and facility needs. The Section Chief, Peripheral Vascular Surgery Section, VA Providence Healthcare System (VAPHCS).

Maintains professional, technical and administrative knowledge, competencies and skills to provide effective leadership and direction for the section and timely and quality responses to patients' clinical needs and problems.

Patients seen and treated can range from 18 through the geriatric years.

Complies with credentialing and privileging, ensures the staff meet those requirements and all other monitoring and evaluation needs.

Maintains high clinical and ethical standards that are carried into decision-making processes and takes an active role in effective teaching of residents and medical students and accomplishing the Medical Center's and the Surgical Service's mission and goals.

Assesses and prioritizes equipment needs for the section and informs the Chief, Surgical Service.

Promotes constructive problem resolution in an environment of competing priorities and promotes the development of health care professionals through counseling, mentoring, teaching and encouraging self-assessment.

Complies with current standards for medical record documentation and residency supervision and assumes accountability for professional and administrative activities within the section.

Provides service consisting of the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients consulted through the section on an inpatient and outpatient basis; provides and promotes high quality and effective care of its patients; supervises and teaches residents and medical students; and monitors and evaluates patient care through various quality management activities.

Responsible for managing section operations. Process for M&E the quality and appropriateness of care and treatment of patients and clinical performance of individuals with privileges.

Assume responsibility for the continuous assessment and improvement of quality of patient care and services provided.

When involved in direct patient care or when supervising same, demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities to: conduct examinations; determine diagnosis; therapeutic ability; effectiveness in emergencies; patient management; consultation; patient education; specialty skills; dictations and record keeping.

Maintains a high standard of teaching through direct patient care experiences in the 0.R.

Suite, performing procedures and interpreting findings; in the Vascular Surgery Clinic and on the patient units.

Resident supervision is performed through direct observation, teaching evaluations and/or performance evaluations. Ensures effective supervision of residents in the section by all staff physicians.

Precept medical students and teach courses, when applicable, at Brown University School of Medicine.
