Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves working at a heritage center in Nome, Alaska, where you'll greet visitors, answer questions about local history, nature, and activities, and help run the front desk including sales and basic operations.

It's a front-line role supporting park education and customer service during the summer months.

A good fit would be someone outgoing, reliable, and familiar with Alaska's remote communities, especially if they've lived or worked nearby.

Full Job Description

NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039-hour season.

This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season(s) reflected in this announcement. See the Additional Information section for details.

The typical season for this position is May - August but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is May 2026.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement 04/10/2026 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required.

Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

-AND- To be eligible your application package must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration.

Areas considered "near" Bering Land Bridge National Preserve are the communities of Nome, Shishmaref, Wales, Brevig Mission, Teller, White Mountain, Golovin, Koyuk, Stebbins, St.

Michael, Unalakleet, Gambell, Savoonga, Little Diomede, Elim, Shaktoolik, Deering, Buckland, and Kotzebue. -ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.

Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Ability to answer a variety of questions and provide information.

Ability to speak clearly, effectively, and confidently to individuals and groups of people while projecting a positive image.

Ability to display a high level of effort and commitment towards performing work and demonstrate responsible behavior.

Ability to show understanding and relate well to people from various backgrounds and in different situations.

Ability to operate and maintain audio-visual equipment sufficient to support needs of staff. Major Duties:

Duties of the position include but are not limited to the following: Serve as a front-line representative of the unit, working at the Bering Land Bridge Heritage Center, located in the Sitnasuak Building on Front Street.

Open, close, and operate the Heritage Center. Answer questions from visitors about Bering Land Bridge National Preserve and the Seward Peninsula, local culture, nature, and outdoor activities.

Use good customer service skills to help people who walk in the door, call on the phone, or write in with a question. Document visitation statistics.

Assist rangers when they develop and present educational programs for groups of children and adults. Operate audio-visual equipment, standard office equipment, and computers.

Stock brochures and keep the front desk organized. Sell books, operate a cash register, and keep the bookstore neat. Please visit find a park for additional park information.
