Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job is for students to get hands-on experience helping maintain parks, like fixing picnic tables, cleaning facilities, and doing basic repairs on buildings and grounds.

It's a great fit for college students or those in certificate programs who are interested in outdoor work, enjoy using tools, and want to learn trades like carpentry or plumbing under supervision.

No prior experience is needed, but you must be physically fit and enrolled in school.

Full Job Description

This position is established to provide a meaningful work opportunity in the Maintenance Worker/Mechanic, WG-4749, occupation.

The employment opportunity may involve specific work assignments and a variety of assignments, and working with intermediate and journeymen level staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience.

To be eligible for this pathway position you must: 1) Be enrolled in a degree seeking program or a 1-year certificate program. 2) Be enrolled on one half (1/2) time basis.

3) Have a minimum 2.0 grade average. 4) Attending an accredited educational institution.

5) Provide transcripts with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking.

6) Be enrolled for the next semester/quarter following the period of this vacancy.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc.

(includes blueprints reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.

Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments SCREEN OUT: Perform simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades.

Used simple measures and hand tools to replace broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches, and catches.

Used a brush and roller on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.

Tightened or replaced plumbing fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaced faucet washers; unplugged drains using a plunger; replaced liquid petroleum gas bottles.

Performed routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances.

Operated a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites. Cleaned and serviced chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities.

Operated a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging.

Work has been under close supervision and I referred unusual problems to the supervisor or a higher graded employee.

A specific length of time and experience is not required. Qualification requirement emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

You must meet the 2 point level on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements listed.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

Performs simple and routine maintenance of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities.

Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work.

Performs the following: minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools, minor painting using brushes and rollers, minor plumbing such as tightening and replacing fittings and washers, using a plunger as necessary.

Mows grass and maintains trees and shrubs. Performs routine maintenance around campground sites and trails, collects trash, cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms and other facilities.

Operates light truck to pick up supplies or to transport materials to and from work sites.

Cut-off Dates: This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates.
