Full Job Description

This position performs simple and routine work involved in maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc.

(includes blueprints reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.

Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments SCREEN OUT MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Perform common maintenance worker duties as a deckhand.

Have assisted with the operation of painting exterior and interior surfaces, routine maintenance of tools and equipment and performed general maintenance on pumps and motors, such as checking and replacing oil, batteries or filters and repairs on ships or tugs, and other trades appropriate to this position without more than normal supervision.

Take initiative to solve problems and accomplish work assignments in a safe manner. Tasks assigned to me are inspected upon completion by my work leader or supervisor for conformance to requirements.

Possess a strong work ethic, dexterity and can perform strenuous work as required by the position. Possess the ability to use a computer, maintain records, and perform simple arithmetic calculations.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, boats, docks and related utilities. Performs minor painting and plumbing.

Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work. Operates a forklift to load and unload supplies and light equipment not requiring special rigging.

Receives, unloads and processes incoming shipments according to established procedures. Reports discrepancies and damage to others responsible for such items.

Operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.

Cleans and services chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. Makes minor repairs as needed and refers problems to higher graded workers.

Works as a deck hand on the Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM).

AREA INFORMATION Government Housing maybe available. Isle Royale National Park is a large, remote and isolated island in northwestern Lake Superior.

With numerous lakes and native wildlife such as moose and wolves, the park offers a superb setting for recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, camping, fishing, hiking and more.

Isle Royale is located approximately 70 miles north of the park's administrative headquarters in Houghton, MI.

The incumbent will be duty stationed on the island and is required to occupy government quarters. Rent will be paid by the incumbent based on OMB Circular 45 guidelines.

Isle Royale is 99% federally-designated Wilderness with no roads, few telephones, no cellular coverage, limited amenities and limited opportunity to travel to the mainland.

Internet access for personal business on government computers is permitted during non-business hours.

Groceries and other supplies are delivered weekly or bi-weekly depending on incumbent's specific duty station on the island.
