Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves working at Sitka National Historical Park in Alaska, where you'll greet visitors at the front desk, give guided talks about the park's history and nature, and patrol trails to share information and ensure safety.

Key Requirements

  • Special knowledge or expertise in the park's natural and/or cultural resources and their management

  • Prior experience living or working in or near the area of consideration

  • Ability to provide professional customer service and operate a busy visitor center desk
  • Skill in delivering prescribed talks, demonstrations, and guiding small groups (up to 20 people) on natural or historical topics
  • Capability to conduct on-foot patrols, enforce regulations, and assist with visitor safety and first aid (to training level)

Full Job Description

NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039-hour season.

This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season(s) reflected in this announcement. See the Additional Information section for details.

The typical season for this position is April - September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is April 2026.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement 03/10/2026 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required.

Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

-AND- To be eligible your application package must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration.

The area of consideration can be found in the below paragraphs.

Areas considered "near" Sitka National Historical Park are Baranof Island, which includes the community of Sitka, and the adjacent Admiralty Island including Angoon, the adjacent Chichagof Island including Hoonah, and the nearby City and Borough of Juneau.

-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.

Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Ability to communicate verbally to groups in a variety of settings.

Ability to provide professional customer service.

Skill in daily operation of a busy visitor center/ information desk or similar facility to include providing frontline information and support services.

Ability to deliver natural and/or historical information through prescribed talks/demonstrations and provide guide services to parties of small size (as many as 20 people). Major Duties:

Duties of the position include but are not limited to the following: Performing visitor center front desk support by responding to visitor inquiries.

Giving talks: Provides pre-established talks normally following a prescribed outline and requiring the application of subject matter knowledge of the feature of interest peculiar to the site.

Such talks include detailed and specific interpretation and explanation of the outstanding features on the site from the standpoint of scientific or historical interest, the background of events leading up to the feature or phenomenon, the facts, events, personalities and circumstances.

In addition, the talks provide general information about other sites of public interest, facilities for public use, pertinent rules and regulations and other matters designed to stimulate a sense of appreciation and thus encourage protection and preservation of the scenic, scientific or historic features.

Provide services to visitors, such as assistance with first aid to the individuals level of training, providing information about weather conditions etc.

Completing a variety of supportive functions such as maintaining property inventory or recording statistics.

Conducting on-foot roving patrols of the park to provide informal interpretation and to protect natural and cultural resources.

Advising visitors of park regulations and explaining the importance of such to encourage visitor support for protection of the resources and/or safety of visitors.

Providing public orientation and explanations of current park events and informing visitors of potential safety hazards. Please visit find a park for additional park information.
