Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves helping manage a museum's collection of historical artifacts in a national park in Alaska, including tasks like organizing records, cleaning items, and monitoring storage conditions under a curator's guidance.

Full Job Description

NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039-hour season.

This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season(s) reflected in this announcement. See the Additional Information section for details.

The typical season for this position is April - September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is April 2026.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required.

Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

The area of consideration can be found in the below paragraph: Areas considered "near" Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park are the Municipality of Skagway Borough, which includes the communities of Skagway, Dyea, Haines, Klukwan, Gustavus, and Juneau.

-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.

Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Ability to communicate information in a clear and concise manner.

This includes knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and correct terminology appropriate to museum operations.

Knowledge of computer operation and a variety of software packages in order to complete inventory, cataloging, and extraction of data from relational databases.

Skill in using basic hand tools, such as screw drivers, box cutters, hammers, or wrenches with prescribed safety precautions.

Broad knowledge of history, archeology, ethology, and biology as it applies to museum collections. Basic understanding of core museum collection conservation and preservation practices.

Knowledge of museum practices, procedures, techniques, and record systems, including accessioning, cataloging, paper and electronic file systems, and collection storage procedures. Major Duties:

The Museum Technician works within the park's museum program under the guidance of the Museum Curator.

Duties of the position include but are not limited to the following: Creates, updates, and maintains hard-copy and electronic curatorial records including accession records, catalog records, and donation documentation; produces and organizes other records, such as inventories and object lists.

Files records in appropriate accession folders and affixes catalog numbers to objects. Maintains and updates MCMS cataloging database.

Performs routine research for cataloging of objects and placing them in museum exhibits, as well as other purposes as assigned.

Utilizes archives and museum collection to answer research requests from outside researchers and from park staff. Refers unusual or more extensive requests to the museum curator.

Implements museum maintenance and housekeeping schedules. Performs routine cleaning of objects as directed and according to established museum standards.

Assists in scheduled cleaning of museum collections storage and museum exhibits. Carries out various aspects of museum environmental monitoring program.

This includes gathering data, maintaining monitoring equipment, and creating permanent data records. Assists with installation, repair, and rehabilitation of exhibits.

Contributes to Annual Inventory of Collections and other annual museum program reporting requirements.

Unpacks newly acquired or loaned objects and processes them; performs limited cleaning as appropriate; identifies preservation needs and recommends additional actions.

Repacks or rehouses objects with care, assuring complete labeling that preserves all data associated with the objects.

Identifies and labels objects by matching documentation, field labels, collector notes, etc. with the objects. Prepares objects for storage, display or loan. Inventories, documents, and stores items.

Seeks assistance for situations not covered by instructions or guidelines.

Places processed objects in storage, maintaining the established organization and updating location information in the data base. Catalogs objects.

Enters cataloging data into the designated MCMS catalog program using established NPS procedures as detailed in the NPS museum handbook.

Performs a variety of clerical operations in support of the curatorial operation.

This may include handling office records and correspondence; inventorying and ordering supplies; managing computer equipment, including hardware, software, and databases; and other duties as assigned.
