This seasonal job with the National Park Service in Alaska involves fieldwork like surveying and excavating archaeological sites, as well as lab work to clean and catalog artifacts from Wrangell-St.
Elias National Park. It requires working outdoors in rugged conditions from May to December, often in remote areas.
A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in archaeology who knows the local Alaskan environment and enjoys physical, team-based projects.
NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039-hour season.
This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season(s) reflected in this announcement. See the Additional Information section for details.

Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

Elias National Park and Preserve are Chisana, Chistochina, Chitina, Copper Center, Dot Lake, Gakona, Gakona Junction, Glennallen, Gulkana, Healy Lake, Kenny Lake, Long Lake, Lower & Upper Tonsina, McCarthy, Mendeltna, Mentasta Lake, Nabesna, Nelchina, Northway/Northway Village, Northway Junction, Slana, Tanacross, Tazlina, Tetlin, Tok, Tonsina and Yakutat.
-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.
Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Proficiency in excavation, surveying, mapping and artifact recovery techniques.
Understanding of laws and regulations like National Register of Historic Places, Archaeological Resources Protection Act and Native America Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
Familiarity with tools (e.g. GPS, GIS, photography) for data collection and documentation. Ability to clean, catalog, and analyze artifacts in a lab setting.
Effective collaboration and clear reporting through field notes and reports. Adherence to safety protocols and environmental protection standards. Major Duties:
The typical season for this position is May - December but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is May 2026.
Duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following: Conduct surveys, excavations, and site documentation, including mapping and artifact recovery.
Clean, catalog, and analyze artifacts in the laboratory, maintaining accurate records. Follow federal and state regulations in field and lab work.
Prepare field notes, site maps, and draft sections of archaeological reports. Adhere to safety protocols during fieldwork and ensure environmental protection of sites.
Work closely with archaeologists, supervisors, and other technicians to meet project goals. Perform physically demanding tasks in various outdoor environments, including long hours and travel.
