The typical season for this position is April - September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is April 2026.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required.
Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

Areas considered "near" Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park are the Municipality of Skagway Borough, which includes the communities of Skagway, Dyea, Haines, Klukwan, Gustavus, and Juneau.
-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.
Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker (Trails) with normal supervision.
Ability to provide physical effort needed to complete assigned tasks and projects including lifting and carrying objects up to 100 pounds, working in extreme weather conditions, and hiking up to 20 miles per day while packing equipment.
Ability to perform work safely using established guidelines and specific instructions as provided. Safe operation of equipment and vehicles including transportation vehicles. Major Duties:
As a Maintenance Worker (Trails), you will work primarily on the backcountry and front country trails to assist journeyman level tradesman in all areas of trails maintenance in the park unit.
Those duties will include: Assist in the maintenance and construction of graded and paved trails, trail drainage, trail bridges, and guard rails.
Assist in the installation, repair and replacement of water diversion bars, cribbing and retainer walls. Remove windfalls, rockslides, surface outcropping and debris from trails.
Build up tread surfaces in eroded areas. Install steppingstones at creek crossings. Install steppingstones at creek crossings where bridges cannot be constructed.
Safely and effectively use and maintain hand power tools required for the job.
Assist with other duties such as painting, carpentry, janitorial, cleaning, trash pickup, grounds keeping, digging, raking, sweeping, transporting supplies, and removal of snow and ice.
