Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves hands-on outdoor maintenance work at Denali National Park in Alaska, such as loading supplies, digging trenches, cutting vegetation, and cleaning up litter and facilities to keep the park in good shape.

Full Job Description

NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039-hour season.

This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season(s) reflected in this announcement. See the Additional Information section for details.

The typical season for this position is May - September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is May 2026.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement 02/27/2026 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required.

Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

-AND- To be eligible your application package must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration.

Areas considered "near" the Denali National Park and Preserve duty station include only: Anderson, Cantwell, Chulitna, Clear, Curry, Denali Park, Ferry, Healy, Kantishna, Lake Minchumina, McKinley Village, Nenana, Nikolai, Petersville, Talkeetna, Tanana, Telida, and Trapper Creek.

-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.

Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Ability to do the work of a Laborer without more than normal supervision.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Knowledge of materials used by a Laborer. Skill in the use of measuring instruments.

Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. Major Duties:

If selected, you will work as a Laborer, WG-3502-04 at Denali National Park and Preserve.

Duties include but are not limited to the following: Loads and unloads supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc.

Moves furniture, removes, and sets signs, paints picnic tables and signs, rakes and waters lawns, trims trees and shrubbery, picks up litter, cleans and repairs fire pits.

Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where soil is hard and compact and must grade or slope; occasionally breaks up pavement, soil, or concrete: mixes and pours concrete, asphalt, and hot/cold mix; fills and levels holes in damaged roads.

Moves heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; uses heavy type power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning, and oiling.

Cuts trees and heavy vegetation with axe, chainsaw, or powered brush cutters; stacks heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement, etc. Performs janitorial duties for buildings and grounds when required.
