Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves hands-on carpentry work to build, fix, and maintain wooden structures like cabins, docks, and boardwalks in a remote national park on an island in Lake Superior.

Full Job Description

The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of carpentry trade work that requires intermediate level skills to help construct, alter, maintain, and repair wooden buildings, structures, cabins, ships, boats, docks, boardwalks, bridges, floors, decks, handrails, fences, signs, partitions, panels, and/or other items made of wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc.

(other than blueprints) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.

Knowledge of materials Measurement and Layout Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) SCREEN OUT: The ability to perform common Carpentry Worker duties associated with more than one trade area (such as carpentry, drywall, painting, roofing, building maintenance and other trades appropriate to this position) without more than normal supervision.

You must have the ability to take initiative to solve problems; accomplish work assignments in a safe manner; and have used and maintained a variety of tools, and equipment in a safe manner.

Tasks assignments are inspected upon completion by my work leader or supervisor for conformance to requirements.

Major Duties:

The duties of this position consists of remodeling, construction, repairs, and installation of items such as framework, floor joist, rafters, roof sheathing, sub-flooring, decking, framing for doors, windows using a variety of materials, wood, timbers, beams, plywood, particle board, sheet rock, paneling tile, etc.

which uses a wide variety of tools associated with the carpentry trade: hand saws, both cross-cut and rip blade, power circular saws, table saws, radial arm saws, power and hand drills, hand planers, and power planers.

You may also install partitions, doors, windows, shelving, counters, and cabinets, so they must be proficient in measuring, cutting, and installing woodwork using on-site measurements, verbal directions, or from simple drawings and specifications.

Other duties may include loading, unloading, and material inventory.

Cut-off Dates: This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates.

Isle Royale National Park is a large, remote, and isolated island in the northwestern corner of Lake Superior.

With numerous lakes and native wildlife such as moose and wolves, the park offers a superb setting for recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, camping, fishing, hiking, and more.

Isle Royale is located approximately 70 miles north of the park's administrative headquarters in Houghton, MI. The incumbent will be duty stationed on the island and occupy government quarters.

Rent will be paid by the incumbent based on OMB Circular 45 guidelines.

Isle Royale is 99% federally designated Wilderness with no roads, few telephones, no cellular coverage, limited amenities, and limited opportunity to travel to the mainland.

The primary mode of travel throughout the island is by boat or hiking. Internet access for personal business on government computers is permitted during non-business hours.

Government provided Wi-Fi is also available at most duty stations. Groceries and other supplies are delivered weekly or bi-weekly depending on incumbent's specific duty station on the island.

To protect Isle Royale's fauna from disease and other maladies, pets are prohibited.
