SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs as a field leader for Sea Turtle Research Programs, and three months of experience assisting or leading a sea turtle program or previous animal handling experience is required.

-AND- In addition to the Selective Placement Factors listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).
For this position, specialized experience must have been related to the work of the position for which application is made.
The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: 1) Research activity or control program work; 2) Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; and/or 3) Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.

NOTE: Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as: biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.
At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled.
The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work.

To combine education and experience, first divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12.
Then divide the number of completed post high school semester hours of education, (that are in excess of 60 semester hours) by 60.
Add the two percentages together; the total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
NOTE: Only post high school education in excess of more than two-years may be used to qualify for this position. You must include a copy of your transcripts.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:
As a Biological Science Technician (Wildlife), you will perform the following duties: Assists with natural resource monitoring efforts.
Collects morphologic data on nesting sea turtles, migratory birds, Nassau groupers, and other threatened and endangered (T&E) species.
Conducts long-term monitoring of sea turtle populations including nest surveys, hatchling success assessments, tagging, and data analysis to support conservation and management objectives.
Coordinates logistics and fosters collaborative relationships with scientists from academic institutions, territorial and federal agencies, and other partners conducting resource status assessments, research studies to improve management, and invasive species control.
Provides updated sea turtle status information to the broader sea turtle research community.
Communicates with local and regional staff, territorial managers, and researchers regarding T&E species status, wildlife management efforts, and current research results.
Maintains vessels, vehicles, sea turtle program equipment, and other scientific supplies used for wildlife monitoring activities. Performs data entry, research, and report writing in an office setting.
Additional work will occur outdoors, including on boats and in-water using snorkel gear.
