Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves helping with fieldwork to find and document ancient sites, historical artifacts, and fossils on wildlife refuge lands in Washington state, working under professional archaeologists.

It's a short-term role lasting up to about six months, focused on surveys and basic data analysis for environmental projects.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in outdoor fieldwork or a relevant college degree, who enjoys nature and detail-oriented tasks.

Key Requirements

  • One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 level, such as assisting in archaeological field studies or identifying cultural resources

  • Ability to participate in cultural resource surveys and inventories on refuge lands

Full Job Description

This position is an Archeological Technician, GS- 0102-5 working in Othello Washington for the Central Washington National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

This is a temporary position NTE (Not to Exceed) 1039 Hours. Only experience and education obtained by 02/20/2026 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualifications.

Minimum Qualification [GS-5] One (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisting professional archeologist in performing actual field studies; and carrying out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources for planning systems regarding cultural resources; OR A Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study, beyond high school, leading to a bachelor's degree with coursework related to the position being filled; OR A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

This is a temporary appointment intended for seasonal work that is less than 6 months or 1040 hours from the date of appointment/service year.

It is expected this position will be terminated upon completion of the seasons work.

The agency may non-competitively rehire an eligible temporary seasonal worker in subsequent years who works less than 6 months or 1040 hours in their service year.

As a Seasonal - Archeological Technician your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Participates in cultural resource clearances to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources in areas designated for management activities and/or undertakings.

Complies and provides preliminary analysis of data obtained during inventories; incorporates findings into various management reports.

Research files and records to obtain information about sites scheduled for cultural inventories Assists professional archeologist in presenting findings and recommendations.
