Are you interested in a rewarding job that provides an important service to the youth of the City of Norfolk? If so, the City of Norfolk's Police Department is seeking candidates for the position of School Crossing Guard within the Special Enforcement Division.

The part-time School Crossing Guard position is responsible for protecting and assisting students at schools within the City of Norfolk. The position serves the community by ensuring the safe crossing of school children at designated crossing sections at the beginning and end of each school day. There are additional opportunities to work additional traffic control assignments during City sponsored special events. School Crossing Guards are also provided the necessary training to ensure proper methods of traffic direction.

Requirements

***The departmental hiring rate for this position is $19.55 per hour***

Essential functions include but are not limited to:
  • Observes traffic conditions and controls flow of traffic to allow children to arrive and depart schools.
  • Directs children, maintaining positive control over movement.
  • Directs movement of vehicles to maintain safe conditions.
  • Instructs children in methods to cross streets and other safe behavior in and around traffic.
  • Performs other safety or traffic related tasks as directed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

Additional Information

  • Required to wear city issued uniforms that are kept in good condition and worn while on duty.
  • Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously.
  • Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddles STOP message during the entire crossing movement.
  • Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injuries.
  • Represent the Norfolk Police Department in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Must be able to stand for up to 60 minutes at a time.
  • Must be able to walk and go up and down a curb/sidewalk.
Work Hours:
One of three shift assignments available, indicated below. Shifts are assigned based off of department needs.
Monday - Friday
- Shift One: 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
- Shift Two: 8:10 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. and 3:05 p.m. to 3:50 p.m.
- Shift Three: 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and 3:40 p.m. to 4:25 p.m.
