Serves as the influenza and respiratory disease surveillance program coordinator in the Communicable Disease Epidemiology Section (CDES), under general supervision of the Epidemiology Programs Unit Lead. Collaborates with CDES medical consultants and regional staff, Public Health Laboratory staff, and respiratory disease working groups to develop influenza and respiratory disease surveillance and outbreak response protocols. Serves as the liaison and primary point of contact between CDES and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding influenza and respiratory disease surveillance activities.

Responsible for novel, seasonal, and pandemic influenza surveillance.

Collects and analyzes influenza data from multiple sources including sentinel ILI sites, syndromic surveillance, electronic surveillance system, and reporting institutions such as hospitals or long-term care facilities.

Interprets the weekly flu status and submits reports to CDC. Leads and/or participates in outbreak investigations. Manages influenza-like illness (ILI) provider enrollment.

Reviews and approves disease notifications in electronic disease surveillance system. Publishes FluWatch weekly during flu season.

Participates in expanding and enhancing the capacity for the surveillance of non-influenza respiratory viruses. Supervises the respiratory disease epidemiologist.Utilizing statistical software (e.g.

SAS, SPSS, EpiInfo, Access, Excel), develops and assesses quality assurance standards, analysis tools, and reports for the robustness (timeliness, completeness, and effectiveness) of the surveillance system for influenza and other reportable diseases.

Participates in validation of electronic data transmissions from hospitals, reference labs, and other providers. Provides education and training to DPH staff as needed.

Writes grant proposals and reports related to influenza and other respiratory diseases. Writes and updates policies and guidance documents. Writes articles for the EpiNotes and other publications.

Participates in CDES on-call activities by serving as the on-call consultant and responding to calls from the public, healthcare providers, Regional Epidemiology staff and others as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

State Minimum Requirements: Master's degree in Public Health in epidemiology, biostatistics or a closely related field and relevant working experience.

A Doctoral degree in epidemiology, or advanced training in applied epidemiology, such as the Public Health Prevention Specialist Program at CDC may substitute for experience.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
