Job Description

Summary

This job involves planning and leading recreational activities for residents in a veterans' nursing facility, including group games, arts and crafts, outings like shopping trips or movies, and one-on-one interactions to improve their quality of life.

A good fit would be someone patient and creative who enjoys working with older adults, has experience in recreation or health-related fields, and is comfortable driving for group activities.

Key Requirements

  • Successful completion of 60 semester hours from an accredited college or university, with at least 18 hours in health, physical education, recreation, arts, or therapeutic recreation
  • OR equivalent full-time or part-time paid/volunteer experience in health, physical education, recreation, or arts (1 year per 30 semester hours)
  • OR registration as an Activity Professional Certified (APC) or Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Ability to document residents' participation and behavior
  • Shift: 10:00 am to 8:00 pm
  • Encourage and assist residents in daily activities and outings

Full Job Description


Carry out daily scheduled activities along with one-on-one interaction with residents. Must be able to assist in facility functions and out of facility activities such as shopping, trips, movie outings, lunch trips etc. Implements weekly and monthly activities to provide structural groups or individual recreation for residents. Instructs groups in sports, arts and crafts and other group functions such as board games, cards, etc. Ensures quality of life for residents by providing individual interest to each resident. Inspects the area of recreation and equipment for safety. Gathers and dispenses equipment, material, and supplies for activities. Documents residents’ participation and behavior. Plans individual activities to reduce behaviors. May drive buses or vans to various activities. Carries out instructions by Director of Activities. Encourage residents to attend and participate in daily activities.

Qualifications

Training: Successful completion of sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited college or university with at least eighteen (18) hours in health, physical education, recreation, arts or therapeutic recreation.

OR

Substitution: Full-time or equivalent part-time paid or volunteer experience in the area of health, physical education, recreation, or arts may substitute for the required training at a rate of one (1) year for every thirty (30) semester hours.

OR

Registration as an Activity Professional Certified (APC) by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals or Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.


Special Requirements: Must possess a valid driver’s license.
