Job Description

Summary

This job involves visiting homes and buildings to measure, inspect, and photograph them for property tax assessments, while entering the details into specialized software.

It also includes reviewing ownership documents, updating records, and sometimes talking to homeowners about their properties.

It's a good fit for someone detail-oriented with basic knowledge of real estate or construction who enjoys fieldwork and working with data.

Key Requirements

  • High School diploma, preferably with business courses in appraisal methods or related technical fields
  • One year of experience in real estate listing, property appraisal, surveying, building trades, or a closely related technical field
  • Equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides required skills
  • Possession of a valid driver's license from the State of Michigan
  • Michigan Certified Assessing Technician certification from the State Tax Commission (preferred)
  • Ability to measure, inspect, and photograph residential properties
  • Proficiency in entering data into assessing software and creating building sketches

Full Job Description

The purpose of this job is to collect data as it relates to real property appraisal and assessment. Inputs data, draft, and updates sketches and photos of real property into the assessment appraisal software. Provides support for Real and Personal Property Appraisers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Measures, inspects and takes photos of residential real property. Records building dimensions, story height, building characteristics, foundation type, quality of construction and size.
  • Observes and notes building condition and amount of physical depreciation and enters data into the BS&A Assessing.NET software and building sketches into the APEX Sketch software.
  • Read deeds, Property Transfer Affidavits and Principal Residence Exemption Affidavits (PRE) and enters the transfer of ownership information and PRE data into applicable assessing software.
  • Audits records for Principal Residence Exemption status and issues denial of Principal Residence Exemption when applicable.
  • Interviews residential property owners and provides residential appraisal and related information as requested by the public.
  • Reviews deeds and records for type of sale, updates the assessment database to reflect changes and enters appropriate appraisal information from forms to the permanent record.
  • Performs related work as required.

Requirements


  • High School diploma, supplemented by business courses related to appraisal methods or related technical fields and no experience, or High School diploma
--AND--
  • (1) year of experience in real estate listing, property appraisal, surveying, building trades or closely related technical field
--OR--
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Possession of a valid driver's license from the State of Michigan.
  • Michigan Certified Assessing Technician certification from the State Tax Commission is preferred.
