Job Description

Summary

This job involves overseeing safe and efficient operations at military training ranges, including monitoring activities, handling safety issues, and maintaining vehicles used on the ranges.

It's a temporary position up to eight years at Fort Hood, Texas, ideal for someone with military or safety experience who enjoys working in a dynamic outdoor environment.

A good fit would be veterans, military spouses, or those with relevant education in operations or safety who can handle high-risk settings.

Key Requirements

About the Position: The installation rests in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 150 miles north of San Antonio.

Position may be filled as a Term Appointment NTE 2 Years. Term appointments may be extended beyond of six (6) years, up to eight (8) years.

With DoD approval, Term appointments may be extended beyond eight (8) years.

Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a Term appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with NO statutory return rights back to a permanent position.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes includes utilizing various automation systems to monitor range operations, managing preventive maintenance services and basic repairs on tactical wheeled vehicles, communicate range operations information such as occupancy of ranges, incident reports or range safety problems encountered on ranges.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Military Operations or Occupational Safety.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12.

Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).

Major Duties:

  • Responsible for implementing range operations functions directly related to the safe and efficient utilization of the range complex in the use of high risk weapons, ammunition, and other hazardous materials on multiple ranges, and training sites.
  • Monitor all firing and range activities to impose limitations on ranges and training areas, considering proximity, compatibility of programs, or to immediately suspend operations if the safety of personnel is questionable.
  • Conduct both planned and unscheduled inspections of firing programs and range complex operations.
