King County Metro Transit’s Rail Division has an exciting opportunity for multiple Rail Facilities Mechanics.

The Rail Facilities Mechanics are responsible for the maintenance, repair and upgrades of Light Rail operating facilities, supporting systems and equipment. Responsibilities also include the coordination and oversight of the work performed by outside contractors working in an assortment of crafts and engaged in a variety of building and systems maintenance, repair and enhancement.

This recruitment may immediately fill up to seven (7) Career Service positions and may also be used to establish an eligibility pool for future Career Service vacancies in this classification, valid up to 12 months or until exhausted and at the discretion of the hiring authority.

About Metro Transit's Expanding Rail Division

King County Metro Transit's Rail Division manages and maintains Sound Transit's Link light rail service and City of Seattle’s streetcar system.

Link light rail currently spans a 41-mile route from SeaTac to Federal Way and a 6.6-mile route from Redmond to South Bellevue.

By the end of 2026, light rail is projected to expand to nearly 60 route miles, adding two new stations. Additional expansions to the Link system will be coming online for years to come.

Seattle Streetcar includes the 1.3 mile South Lake Union line and the 2.5 mile First Hill line, proudly serving the diverse and vibrant communities around Seattle’s downtown core.

These rail services complement Metro's extensive fixed-route bus system and mobility services.

Puget Sound transit agencies are collaborating to create an integrated transit network that enables people to travel farther, faster, and more easily.

Pay
Per the union contract, shift differential is paid to those working second and third shifts. Shift pay is 5% for second shift and 7.5% for third shift, on top of hourly pay. The pay range is a five-step pay range, with the full range rates listed below.

First (day & "base pay" rate) Shift: $38.82 to $55.46 per hour.
Second (swing) Shift: $40.76 to $58.23 per hour.
Third (graveyard) Shift: $41.73 to $59.62 per hour.

Work Schedule
This position is anticipated to be full time, assigned 40 hours per week. Employees must be able and willing to work any shift (day, swing or graveyard). This position will initially work the day/night shift with a 4/10 or 5/8 schedule during the training period. Work shift is subject to change based on a seniority bid system and the needs of the business. In addition, this position has on-call responsibilities and must respond to emergency situations as needed. This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore overtime eligible, with prior supervisory approval.

Requirements

Maintain all public and operating facilities, equipment and associated components under the management of Light Rail including maintaining and repairing a variety of plumbing, HVAC, tool, vehicle wash, tunnel and associated systems and equipment.Perform a variety of preventive maintenance functions and service checks on facilities, buildings and equipment; develop specifications for and purchase new equipment and materials.Maintain and repair Fire & Life Safety Systems including sprinklers, Pre-Action systems and standpipes.Perform a variety of plumbing, carpentry and related building trades work; read, interpret and apply blueprints and other drawings; maintain work records and complete work requests.Install, maintain, repair and modify equipment and system assemblies; install, attach or brace appurtenances to buildings, walls, ceilings, doors, door hardware/locks and floors.

Design, layout and fabricate various metal components, parts or fixtures used in the repair, maintenance and modification of facilities, buildings and equipment; perform shop and field welding, layout, cutting and fitting; operate a variety of welding and burning equipment.Coordinate activities and work with other trades, divisions and outside agencies and contractors; inspect work completed by contractors.Perform testing of backflow devices; perform lock and security system maintenance, repair and modification.Setup work zone traffic control areas; flag track way to provide safe rail work zones.Assist other trades as necessary; operate company assigned vehicles; perform snow and ice removal.Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Ideal candidates will have: Completed an apprenticeship, training or vocational school program OR at least three years of journey-level work experience in the Fire & Life Safety Systems, plumbing, welding, and/or mechanical fields, OR a combination of equivalent education, training and experience.

  • Knowledge and understanding of advanced mechanical theory and current practices.
  • Knowledge of related national, state and local codes and means of compliance Knowledge of standard construction practices and principles of building systems and industrial controls.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with applicable safety standards and requirements; skill in maintaining mechanical equipment.
  • Skill in efficiently utilizing appropriate tools and equipment; skill in reading and interpreting blueprints and drawings; skill in reviewing and coordinating the work of others.
  • Skill in establishing, maintaining and encouraging cooperative and equitable working relationships with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Skill in dealing proactively and sensitively with customers; skill in training coworkers on system equipment.
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to solve common problems.

  • Desirable Qualifications:
    • Seattle Fire Department's AS-3 or AS-ITT Automatic Sprinkling Systems Certification; Seattle Fire Department's FEX-1 Fire Extinguisher Inspection Certification.
    • Journey-level Pipefitter, Sprinkler Fitter or Steam Fitter experience.
    • Concrete paver/tile repair experience.
    • Door/locksmith, fencing, overhead coiled door, and/or roofing.
    • Certified Welder.
    • Certified Back-flow Prevention Assembly Tester Boiler.


    Certifications that must be acquired, held and maintained within 12-months of hire, (we provide training materials):

    • Confined Space Entry Certification Forklift and High Lift Certification.

    • Seattle Fire Department's AS-ITT Automatic Sprinkling Systems Certification.

    • Seattle Fire Department's FEX-1 Fire Extinguisher Inspection Certification.


    Physical Requirements:
    • Lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally lift objects up to 100 pounds with assistance.
    • Frequent walking, reaching, climbing, kneeling and stooping.
    • Work in confined spaces and at heights and in cramped and awkward positions.
