Requirements
In this position, you will be responsible for conducting inspections of radioactive materials and x-ray generating equipment to ensure adherence to the radiological rules and regulations set forth by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This role encompasses oversight of PA DEP’s southwest and northwest regions, encompassing the Western Field Division of the Bureau of Radiation Protection. As a Radiation Health Physicist 1, you will work towards completing the Agreement State radioactive materials inspector Qualification Journal, which necessitates a combination of practical on-the-job training and formal instruction. You will accompany qualified inspectors conducting inspections of facilities possessing radioactive materials, including medical, academic, and industrial licensees, as well as industrial x-ray registrants. At the conclusion of these inspections, you will identify instances of non-compliance and prepare reports to document findings regarding conditions which have or may have an adverse effect on health and safety. Fieldwork may require extensive driving, walking, standing and some exposure to inclement weather. This position also includes other duties, such as responding to radiological incidents, investigating inquiries or complaints from the public, participation in the Bureau of Radiation Protection’s emergency response activities for nuclear power plants, and any other job-related duties.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment.
- Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- This position may require travel as needed.
Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time.
In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.
If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the training program for the Radiation Health Physicist Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Five years of technical experience in providing protection to radiation workers, the general public, and the environment from the effects of radiation and possession of a certificate of registration issued by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists; or
- One year of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and a bachelor's degree in health physics, radiation physics, radiation biology, nuclear physics, or applied health physics; or
- One year of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and a bachelor's degree with major course work in the physical, biological, or radiological sciences or in nuclear engineering that includes 20 credits in health physics or radiological sciences; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirement:
- This position requires possession of an active non-commercial PA Class C driver's license or equivalent.
