Full Job Description

Under direction, is responsible for planning, assigning the work of personnel engaged in street maintenance or repair, drainage and sidewalk construction, street cleaning, markings, installation or maintenance of traffic signs, river and ditch maintenance, and/or vegetation management. Work involves assisting with supervision, providing guidance and ordering and controlling supplies. Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, traffic construction dust; damp/wet surfaces, overhead power lines, animal/insect bites, high noise, oily surfaces, liquid asphalt and lime. Exercises technical supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location

Southwest Service Center - 6927 W. Commerce, Building 1, San Antonio, TX 78228; May require working inclement weather events.

Work Hours
6:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m., Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday

Requirements

  • Plans and assigns the work of personnel engaged in mowing operations, street maintenance or repair, drainage and sidewalk construction, street cleaning, markings, installation and/or maintenance of traffic signs, river and ditch maintenance, and/or vegetation management.
  • Assists with supervision, evaluation and training of personnel.
  • Produces written reports regarding work activity, personnel actions, accidents and safety issues, and other related subjects.
  • Provides on-site direction and guidance to employees during assignments, which involves frequently lifting and carrying equipment weighing 25 pounds.
  • Inspects work in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with work standards and local codes, and proper safety techniques.
  • Orders supplies necessary to complete work and ensures availability of equipment.
  • Controls inventory of supplies and ensures security of tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Three (3) years of experience in construction field.
  • Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
  • Must obtain a Valid Texas Commercial Class "B" Driver's License plus all required endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading crews.
  • Experience preparing cost estimates.
  • Experience with Microsoft software (Outlook Excel, Power Point etc.).

Applicant Information

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.

One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

    • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and ordinances.
    • Knowledge of hazards and safety measures related to maintenance, installation and construction.
    • Skill in utilizing a personal computer, associated software, and a two-way radio.
    • Skill in utilizing tools and equipment needed to perform daily functions.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
    • Ability to supervise, train and evaluate personnel.
    • Ability to plan, organize and develop the work of a group of employees.
    • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
    • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
