Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which involves operating multi-line telephones, computers or radio equipment to provide information to callers; obtaining detailed information from callers and inputting data collected into databases and software systems; communicating orally to a wide range of people to obtain and provide information; and complying with standard operating procedures in a fast-paced and changing environment.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Emergency Management, Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Fire Science or Communications.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.

Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).

Major Duties:

  • Provide emergency services to the public by answering emergency 911 calls and responding with appropriate personnel and equipment.
  • Question caller to determine the problem and the nature of the call.
  • Retrieve statistical information from computerized databases.
  • Monitor computerized fire alarm system and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS).
  • Maintain an accurate status of all emergency response equipment and personnel to ensure prompt and accurate response.
  • Operate Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system, radios, and station alerting systems.
  • Provide initial Incident Command support until responding emergency units arrive on scene.
  • Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies.
