JOB PURPOSE:
Under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety This position will be responsible for performing as the law enforcement liaison while providing support for the Agency's Community Service Division including the ankle monitoring program.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the Community Services Division’s Intensive Supervision Officer(s) in reviewing background information, interviews juvenile offenders, assesses juvenile offender risk and needs and develops supervision plans.
Assists to counsel juvenile offenders regarding appropriate behavior and life skills.
Aids with monitoring high risk juvenile offender’s compliance ankle monitoring and other conditions of supervision and locates violators, executes arrests and takes violators into custody.
Assists the Community Service Division by accompanying them on site visits, appointments, etc. of disruptive and violent juveniles.
Transports juvenile(s) as required for appointments in and/or out of state per state guidelines, agency policy and Public Safety operating procedures.
Assists citizens, guests, and other LE agencies with forms, inquiries and processes relating to Public Safety.
Assists with community related events sponsored or co-sponsored by SCDJJ.
Accompanies Community Services Division employees to family court, when requested.
Escorts unauthorized, unruly visitors, or terminated employee(s) off DJJ property.
Patrols assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of law.
Responds to complaints, reports of violations and requests for law enforcement assistance.
Performs general police work such as maintaining order during emergencies, participating in special operations and directed patrols.
Testifies in court and other legal proceedings; prosecutes defendants in magistrate's court.
Keeps records and makes reports regarding activities.
Investigates alleged or suspected violations of criminal law.
Interviews witnesses and suspects.
Directs traffic, investigates traffic collisions, and controls crowds.
Prepares written reports based on his or her actions.
Advises the Public Safety Director on all law enforcement issues affecting the Community Services Division.
Performs other duties deemed necessary by the Director of Public Safety and/or the Inspector General that supports the mission and needs of the agency.
Requirements
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role.
Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures.
Knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence.
Knowledge of the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel.
Knowledge of the laws one is responsible for enforcing.
Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies.
Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons and communications equipment.
Ability to correctly evaluate situations and make good decisions.
Ability to effectively interview witnesses and suspects.
Ability to represent the agency effectively in dealings with the public.
Ability to read and comprehend written materials.
Ability to write clearly and effectively.
Essential Position:
Must be able to work with aggressive delinquent youth daily in accordance with SCDJJ Policies and Procedures. Must be able to lift 50+ lbs., sits 1-3 hours per day, stands 1-3 hours per day, walks 1-3 hours per day and ability to work varied hours to meet organizational needs. Deal with confidential and sensitive information. Prioritize multiple competing priorities during high stress situations. Travels overnight occasionally.
This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
Qualifications
PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. SCCJA Certified Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer.
