Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping to share information about parks, events, and programs through writing, social media, and media outreach to keep the public engaged with Metro Nashville's Parks and Recreation department.

It also includes supporting events, handling inquiries, and assisting during emergencies or crises.

A good fit would be someone with a communications background who enjoys creative work, can handle a fast-paced environment, and is flexible with weekends or overtime.

Full Job Description

The Public Information Representative is a full-time Civil Service position in the Metro Parks and Recreation department.

This position is responsible for assisting with the professional, creative, and technical work and strategies involved in the dissemination of information regarding the policies, programs, events and activities of Metro Parks.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

This position may be required to work weekends and/or overtime.


Metro’s Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of facilities and programs throughout Davidson County.

Currently, the department oversees nearly 16,000 acres of open space, including 178 parks and 99 miles of greenway.

Metro Parks offers after school programs for children, activities for seniors (55+), cultural arts classes, dog parks, fitness classes, nature programs, sports leagues, ice hockey, art galleries, and much more.

It is the mission of Metro Parks and Recreation to sustainably and equitably provide everyone in Davidson County with an inviting network of parks and greenways that offer health, wellness and quality of life through recreation, conservation and community.

Requirements

  • Communicate critical information effectively to the public, and a variety of other departmental constituencies.
  • Write press releases, feature stories, and other information for distribution to media outlets and other constituencies.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of communication campaigns and special events for department initiatives, programs, or emergency situations.
  • Assist with coordinating responses to public inquiries, media requests, and open records requests, ensuring accuracy and consistency in messaging.
  • Maintain, update and develop stories and posts for department’s website and social media platforms.
  • Support the development and dissemination of internal communications such as newsletters, announcement and policy updates to department staff.
  • Monitor communication channels and reports relevant feedback or public sentiment to the primary communications lead.
  • Assist with maintaining contact databases, tracking communication projects, and supporting administrative tasks related to communications activities.
  • Participate in the development or amendment of department rules, policies, and procedures as they relate to communications and media relations.
  • Maintain liaison with administrative and communications personnel in other departments to facilitate efficient operations.
  • Respond as needed during crisis or urgent communications situations.
  • Facilitate HUB Requests, Department emails, and other administrative functions.
  • Perform other administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years experience disseminating information and/or planning public relations activities.

LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid Driver License

Additional Information

  • Experience in journalism, video production, and/or communications preferred
  • Basic graphic art skills and familiarity with Canva, Adobe, Photoshop or other online design and visual communication platforms
  • Experience capturing, editing, and producing photographs for communications use
  • Experience updating websites or collaborating with IT or web administration teams
