Full Job Description

This employee will serve as the Assistant Editor (PIDI) for the South Carolina Wildlife (SCW) magazine and will help to create engaging stories and photography that connects readers with South Carolina's wildlife, natural resources and outdoor recreation.

Job Duties Include:
  • Collaborating with the editor and art director on editorial planning to ensure timely, mission-focused magazine issues that align with outdoor recreation seasons and scientific schedules.
  • Researching, writing and editing assigned articles and columns.
  • Capturing high-quality photography assets to support engaging layouts and visual storytelling. Proactively identifying and obtaining photography needed for future stories and marketing needs.
  • Editing and proofreading all magazine copy to ensure clarity, accuracy, consistency and compliance with SCW standards and policies. This includes reviewing graphics, captions and layouts, providing editorial comments and recommendations to maintain brand alignment and high production quality.
  • Collaborating with magazine vendors, including subscriber services, print facilities and USPS, to optimize operations within contract terms and deliver the highest-quality product within budget.
  • Establishing and enforcing production timelines to ensure all deadlines are met or exceeded.
  • Assigning, coordinating and supervising freelance writers, photographers, and other contributors.
  • Maintaining accurate records of correspondence, assignments, payments, contracts and postage permits.
  • Providing clear guidance and constructive feedback to ensure timely, high-quality work from contractors and freelancers.
  • Developing and implementing an annual marketing and outreach plan using performance data and strategic initiatives to expand subscriptions and audience engagement.
  • Representing the magazine at public events.
  • Collaborating with social media, graphics and other creative services staff to maximize marketing opportunities through licensing, Go Outdoors SC, subscriber services and library partnerships.
  • Managing the day-to-day business functions of SCW, including deposits, freelance payments, postage accounts and purchase orders.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree and three (3) years of related experience.

Qualifications
