Summary

This job involves greeting veterans at the front desk or over the phone, helping them get the right prosthetic or orthotic devices as prescribed by their doctors, and managing related paperwork and records in a VA medical center.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 level, including computer-based record keeping, data compilation, and communication with varied audiences

  • Ability to review and ensure accuracy in correspondence, reports, and prosthetic consults (format, grammar, spelling)
  • Experience composing simple correspondence and providing instructions on using prosthetic devices

  • Knowledge of VHA Handbooks 1173.1 and 1173.2 for prosthetic eligibility, entitlement, and clinical practices

Full Job Description

The primary purpose of this position is to receives veterans at the front desk or by telephone encounter to determine the nature of their visit/telephone call and directs them appropriately.

This position is assigned to the Medical Center Complex located in North Las Vegas.

The primary mission of the healthcare system is to provide care to improve the health of the men and women who have so proudly served our nation.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS 04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Specialized experience includes: Must be proficient working with computer based programs, utilizes the computer to perform a wide variety of record keeping, correspondence, tracking operations and appointment, compiles and compares data for reporting purposes, communicates with people from a variety of backgrounds and with varying levels of understanding, demonstrates or provides instructions to veterans/caretakers in the use of off the shelf prosthetic devices, reviews all outgoing correspondence and reports ensuring proper format, grammar, spelling, etc, composes simple correspondence or other written work.

OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed four (4) years of education above the high school level in any field which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

Transcripts must be submitted at time of application.. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level.

You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond as stated above.

Equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level.

Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

Major Duties:

Duties to include but not limited to the following: Responsible to correctly provide veterans the prescribed over the counter prosthetic/orthotic items according to their physician's request; annotate in the veteran's CPRS, medical record, and enter into prosthetic software computer application; all in accordance VHA Handbook 1173.2 and Prosthetic Clinical Practice guidelines.

Independently reviews prosthetic consults request for eligibility and entitlement and ensures the correct disability code is entered in the prosthetic software in accordance with VHA Handbook 1173.1 Responsible to forward consults to the appropriate service for action or completion.

They may call various services to clarify a provider's prosthetic/orthotic consult order and will sort and distribute printed consults to the appropriate purchasing agents for items that must be ordered (non stock or out of stock items).

Assists the Inventory Managers and Purchasing Agents with mail-outs as needed, receive incoming stock and put on shelves, and assemble mobility equipment according to the manufacturer's written instructions.

Receives applications from veterans and provides processing guidance/information on Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Program applications, (Home Improvement and Structural Alterations and Clothing Allowance).

Required to inform and educate veterans in the use of Prosthetic Service Cards (PSC), and in obtaining repairs for blind aides, braces, wheelchairs and artificial limbs) in accordance with VHA Handbook 1173.2 Processes and documents the return of prosthetic equipment utilizing the prosthetic computer software applications for turn-in of returned/condemned equipment.

Must have the ability and knowledge to interpret clinician's requests, differentiate the many types of appliances, their appropriate application and determine when it is necessary to obtain additional medical referral for the veteran or when a request requires review by the Prosthetic Representatives.

Educates oxygen patients about the procedures involved in receiving and requesting home oxygen, supplies, and may enter prescription information in the computer software application package.

Advises patients as to the availability of products, repairs, and procurement sources in our primary service area.

responsible to participate in the Prosthetic & Sensory Aids quality improvement programs, gathering information from veterans by walk-in or telephone.

Performs other duties as may be directed by the Chief, Assistant Chief, or Prosthetic Representatives, that are required to accomplish the mission of the Prosthetic Treatment Center.
