This job is an entry-level clerical role in a VA clinic where you'll be the main point of contact for veterans and staff needing prosthetic services, handling inquiries by phone or in person.
You'll manage administrative tasks like processing equipment orders, distributing supplies, and coordinating deliveries to ensure smooth support for patients.
It's a good fit for someone with customer service experience or basic office skills who wants to help veterans in a healthcare setting.
This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Healthcare Network (VISN 6), Durham VA Medical Center, Greenville VA Clinic under the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS).
The incumbent will serve as the first point of contact for customers, both internal and external, that require prosthetics services either face-to-face (counter) or by telephone.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/03/2026.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.
An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement.
In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Answering phones, receiving walk ins; responding to questions regarding the Prosthetic Program; ensuring all equipment and supplies are posted, receiving and distributing mail, coordinating property delivery to sister departments and mailing items out directly to patient's homes.
OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience.
To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 4 years above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.
This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university.
One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.

You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond second year.
Only education more than the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

Major Duties:
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT AND EQUIPMENT PROCESSING Serve as the liaison between doctors, nurses, house staff and health care administration to relay information and identify and resolve problems between PSAS and its customers, both internal and external.
He/she must have analytical ability, social awareness, tact and diplomacy, good customer service skills, and the ability to act independently without direct supervisor's direction.
Incumbent must have the ability to deal effectively with individuals and groups and to adjust to difficult and/or stressful situations.
Incumbent initiates and carries out a wide array of advisory and technical duties.
CUSTOMER SERVICE Greets veterans, caregivers, visitors, vendors, and clinicians at the front desk, answering questions, providing durable medical equipment (DME), or directing them to the appropriate location as needed.
Assists in determining the nature of the patient's Prosthetic needs questions or complaints and answers questions, provides information, gives guidance, and initiates action as appropriate.
