Full Job Description

The Primary Purpose of the Position is: To perform a variety of clerical duties in support of the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Section determining eligibility, preparing requisitions and purchasing items.

The Organizational Location of the Position is: Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS), PSAS Administration Section, at all campuses in the VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) Dallas, TX.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/20/2026.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS 04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: render decisions on client eligibility for prosthetic devices and reviews request for prosthetic devices, counsel patients and provide instructions to patients in the use of prosthetic devices or schedule appointments for patients requiring services, review consults for eligibility and take action as needed, purchase minor items of Durable Medical Equipment (DME), help review and check in packages in the prosthetic area and warehouse.

OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have 4 years above high school (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED).

This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.

OR, Combination: : Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond high school.

For GS-5 level positions only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary, requiring some walking, climbing, and carrying light to medium-heavy stock items of up to 50 pounds.

The incumbent may potentially, although infrequently if at all, handle equipment returned from veterans with contagious diseases. Major Duties:

Duties to include but not limited to the following: Administrative Support Renders decisions on client eligibility for prosthetic devices and reviews request for prosthetic devices from a physician. Issues items from Prosthetic Stock and posts to the veteran's Prosthetic Record

by using the Suspense record in the VistA system.

Counsels patients and provides instructions to patients in the use of prosthetic devices Schedules appointments for patents requiring services from the Prosthetic/Orthotic lab.

Creates CPRS consults to the Prosthetic service for replacement Repairs items utilizing the original ICD-9 code submitted by the clinician. Scans in invoices when received and saves on the share drive.

Reviews the GUI system and recognize Auto Lift Requests and HISA requests and mail out applications.

Inventory and Consult Management Answers phone calls and assists the Inventory Manager with mail-outs as needed. Reviews consults for eligibility and take action as needed.

Forwards consults to other clinics as appropriate. Sorts and distributes printed consults to the appropriate purchasing agents for items that must be ordered (non-stock or out of stock items).

Assists with the Clothing Allowance and Home Improvement & Structural Alterations (HISA) programs by providing applications to patients.

Posts items issued from CBOCS including Tyler and Polk and any items issued during Cpap Clinic.

Purchase Requests Purchases minor items of DME and assists with the Prosthetics Service Card (PSC) program to repair braces, wheelchairs, and prosthetic limbs up to the micro purchase threshold (currently set at $15,000.00).

Helps review and checks in packages in the prosthetic area and warehouse when requested and make the appropriate notes in the Vista System.

Performs other related duties as may be directed by the Chief, Assistant Chief, or Prosthetic Representatives that are required to accomplish the mission of the Prosthetic Treatment Center.
