About the Division:
The Toxicology Laboratory is a Division within the Forensic Laboratory Services Bureau of the WSP, providing statewide forensic toxicology services (alcohol and drug testing in biological specimens) for law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys, medical examiners and coroners as outlined in RCW 43.43.670 and WAC 448-14.

About the Position:

The Property and Evidence Custodian supports that mission by providing expert evidence management and is responsible for the receipt, accessioning, storage and disposition of evidence submitted to the Toxicology Laboratory Division for forensic toxicology testing.

The Property and Evidence Custodian interacts with laboratory management (supervisors, managers, assistant division commander, division commander), all technical and/or administrative personnel, customers, including law enforcement agencies, attorneys, medical examiners and coroners.

This position supports the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) for disaster or emergency recovery. In the event of COOP activation, this position will relocate evidence when necessary.

Requirements

  • Process evidence by receiving and releasing evidence to representatives from user agencies.
  • Enter evidence into the laboratory database system.
  • Receive and release items between the laboratory evidence vault and staff.
  • Conducts periodic inventories and audits of evidence.
  • Testify in courts chain of custody as required.
  • Interact with the public and user agencies.
  • Maintain case and laboratory office files.
  • Provide administrative support.

Work Setting:
The working environment is a Toxicology Laboratory where hazardous and biohazardous chemicals and evidence must be safely handled following safety guidelines.


Schedule:
Eight-hour workdays Monday through Friday are typical. Hours may be flexible upon approval of management.

Travel Requirements:
Travel throughout the state may be required for training and meetings or evidence transport to/from the Federal Way Toxicology Laboratory. Transportation is by pool car or other approved means such as air travel if necessary.


Customer Interactions:
Interact with medical examiners, coroners, attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and representatives of the various courier services. Must maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver's License or able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment polygraph examination and background investigation.
  • Provide an oral DNA sample to be used in the CODIS Elimination Profile Index.
