This position description is located at the Department Veteran Affairs, Richmond, Virginia, in the Nutrition and Food Service Department as the Program Support Assistant to the Administrative Officer, Nutrition and Food Service.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide a wide variety of administrative, clerical, and technical support to Nutrition and Food Service.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/22/2026.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For a GS 06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS 05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.
An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement.
In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: knowledge and skill in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to issues or studies of the efficiency and effectiveness of program operations and substantive administrative support functions (internal activities or functions such as supply, budget, procurement, or personnel which serve to facilitate operations); knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, policies and precedents that affect the use of program and related support resources such as budget, procurement, Human Resources, Joint Commission, travel, and time and leave; knowledge of work processes and administrative operations to increase organizational effectiveness; developing new or modified work methods, organizational structures, records and files, management processes, staffing patterns, procedures for administering program services, guidelines and procedures, and automating work processes for the conduct of administrative support functions or program operations; assisting in the development of and changes to policies and procedures at the local level while adhering to National Directives; analyzing problems and presenting written and oral recommendations, taking into full consideration the wide range of factors and requirements applicable; coordinating a credentialing and privileging process and reconciling contradictory requirements; adjusting to changes in policies, procedures, and work deadlines; leading or participating in interdisciplinary team development and task accomplishment; communicating verbally with a variety of people from different backgrounds and different levels of understanding; and using computer equipment with a wide variety of software such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Access, and other databases to extract and organize data, produce letters/memorandums, and prepare a variety of working documents.
OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience.
To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Successful completion of a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree, two (2) full years of graduate level education leading to such a degree, or LL.B.
or J.D. in a related field that demonstrates my ability to perform the duties of this position. NOTE: This education must have been obtained at an accredited college or university.

OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level.
You must have equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond the first year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level.

Major Duties:
Receives request for information, advises when the information can be furnished, and provides it personally from files and records or follows up with staff to see that it is provided.
Provides work involving the collection, compilation, and/or tracking of data and statistical information in support of the NFS program operation.
Reviews documents and reports for completeness and enters patient information into an automated tracking system or creates spreadsheets to track them.
Provides a wide variety of recurring and non recurring correspondence, reports, and other documents.
Collects, assembles, and complies data for recurring, special and one time administrative and management reports. Performs database full searches.
Prepares, executes and/or track program specific information.
Uses email to compose and retrieve correspondences and electronic health care records to access and retrieve confidential patient information.
Schedules appointments, coordinates meetings, and arrange conferences. Serves as timekeeper for the site and maintains service record cards for all employees.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.
