  • Experience setting up and operating machinery such as lathes, planers, millers, grinders, and related equipment
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting instruction books, blueprints, drawings, specifications, charts, tables, and nuclear power engineering documents
  • Competence in shop mathematics, arithmetic, and using precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and depth gauges
  • Ability to diagnose problems through systematic troubleshooting and direct assisting trades persons
  • Knowledge of maintaining pumps to Grade A cleanliness standards for nuclear work

Full Job Description

You will serve as a PRODUCTION MACHINERY MECHANIC in the PIPE SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision: * Performing the installation, maintenance, overhaul, repair, and reconditioning of industrial shop equipment and their attachments.

* Ability to disassemble, modify, overhaul, and repair air compressors, production machinery, heat exchangers, and pumps.

* Setting up and operating inside machinery such as lathes, planers, millers, grinders, and other related specialized equipment.

* Ability to read and interpret instruction books, process instructions, design memorandums (DMs) and nuclear power engineering documents.

* Working from blueprints, drawings, samples or specifications, charts, tables; and performing arithmetic and shop mathematics.

  • You will diagnose and determine corrective procedures in the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and reconditioning of all production shop machines.
  • You will direct work of assisting trades persons.
  • You will troubleshoot problems by systematic step-by-step checks and correct problems when located.
  • You will use various hand and power tools and precision measuring instruments such has height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, verniers, micrometers of various types.
  • You will ensure pumps used in nuclear work are repaired and maintained to a Grade A cleanliness standard.
