Job Description

Summary

This job involves supervising and supporting people on probation or parole by investigating their situations, providing counseling, and helping them adjust back into society while managing a caseload across several counties in West Virginia.

It requires working with individuals who may have criminal histories and could pose risks, often from an office in Martinsburg but including fieldwork in rural areas.

A good fit would be someone with a background in social services, criminal justice, or counseling who is patient, organized, and comfortable handling potentially challenging interactions.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in fields like criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, or related areas
  • Substitution allowed: One year of relevant experience (e.g., counseling, law enforcement, corrections, probation/parole, social services, rehabilitation) for every 30 semester hours of required education
  • Ability to supervise approximately 305 offenders across Berkeley, Morgan, Jefferson, and other specified counties
  • Prepare investigative reports including home plans, clemency, post-sentence, violation reports, and cooperative investigations for other states
  • Work under general supervision with contact involving potentially dangerous clients with criminal backgrounds
  • Condition of employment: Compliance with Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation policies, including potential firearms handling at discretion

Full Job Description

Vacancies: 1

Under general supervision, performs work at the beginning level in investigating, counseling, and providing continuous supervision for a designated caseload of probationers, parolees, and mandatory supervision of offenders to assist in their social and personal adjustment. Work involves contact with potentially dangerous clients with criminal backgrounds. This is a statutory position that is responsible for supervising approximately 180 offenders in Berkeley County, 60 offenders in Morgan County, and 65 offenders in Jefferson County, in addition to completing all assignments to include, but will not be limited to, home plan investigation and other investigative reports, clemency reports, co-operative investigations for other states, post-sentence reports for the Parole Board and corrections facilities and violation reports in the region. This position will be working from the Martinsburg Office.

Will also perform duties in Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan, Pendleton Counties.

Qualifications

Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Preference shall be given to applicants with a degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Business Management, Management, Political Science, Industrial Relations/Management, Organizational Behavior/Management, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Corrections, Social Work or closely related field.

OR

Substitution: Experience in counseling, law enforcement, corrections, probation and parole, social services, and/or rehabilitation services may substitute for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of experience for every thirty (30) semester hours of required training.


Condition of Employment with Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR):

Firearms are to be distributed at the discretion of the Commissioner of the DCR and anyone authorized to carry a firearm must successfully complete a psychological evaluation prior to issuance.

Positions authorized to carry a firearm must meet annual training requirements established through the West Virginia Corrections Academy.
