Job Description

Summary

This entry-level job involves supervising adult probationers and parolees by investigating their backgrounds, providing counseling, and helping them adjust back into society while monitoring their progress.

It requires close interaction with individuals who have criminal histories and may pose risks, including preparing reports for courts and parole boards.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in fields like criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, or related areas
  • Substitution allowed: One year of relevant experience (e.g., counseling, law enforcement, corrections, probation/parole, social services, or rehabilitation) for every 30 semester hours of required education
  • Successful completion of specialized training, licensing, certification, or educational requirements as assigned
  • Ability to work with potentially dangerous offenders and handle close-contact supervision
  • Preparation of investigative reports, including home plans, clemency reports, post-sentence reports, violation reports, and cooperative investigations
  • Condition of employment: Potential authorization to carry firearms at the discretion of the Commissioner of the Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation
  • Submission of official transcripts, training/licensure documents, or Veterans preference forms if applicable

Full Job Description


Under general supervision, performs work at the entry level, in investigating, counseling, and providing continuous supervision for designated caseload of adult probationers or parolees to assist in their social and personal adjustment. Work involves close contact with potentially dangerous offenders with criminal backgrounds. This involves completing all assignments to include but not limited to home plan investigation and other investigative reports, clemency reports, co-operative investigations for other states, post-sentence reports for the Parole Board and other corrections facilities and violation reports in the region. Applicants shall successfully complete specialized training as assigned, including any training, licensing, certification, or educational requirements. Performs related duties as assigned.

This position will be working from the Huntington Parole Office.

Qualifications

Training: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Preference shall be given to applicants with a degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Business Management, Management, Political Science, Industrial Relations/Management, Organizational Behavior/Management, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Corrections, Social Work or closely related field.

OR

Substitution: Experience in counseling, law enforcement, corrections, probation and parole, social services, and/or rehabilitation services may substitute for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of experience for every thirty (30) semester hours of required training.


Condition of Employment with Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR):

Firearms are to be distributed at the discretion of the Commissioner of the DCR and anyone authorized to carry a firearm must successfully complete a psychological evaluation prior to issuance.

Positions authorized to carry a firearm must meet annual training requirements established through the West Virginia Corrections Academy.
