Summary

This role supports the daily operations of Cheraw State Park, handling tasks like customer service in the pro shop, basic maintenance of facilities and grounds, and assisting visitors with recreational activities.

It involves a mix of administrative work, such as managing sales and reports, and hands-on duties to keep the park running smoothly.

Ideal candidates are organized team players who enjoy outdoor work, interacting with the public, and have some background in park management or customer service.

Key Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Park Management or related field, plus 1 year of related experience (or equivalent combination)
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License
  • Knowledge of bookkeeping, merchandising, and sales principles
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy lifting, work on uneven terrain, and handle exposure to weather and cleaning agents
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, for public interactions and training staff
  • Ability to plan, organize tasks, and enforce park rules and policies
  • Experience with routine maintenance, repairs, and public relations activities

Full Job Description

Cheraw State Park takes traditional recreational park activities to a new level of fun. The 18-hole, championship Cheraw State Park Golf Course winds its way through piney woodlands while maintaining and protecting the surrounding natural habitat of the park.

Job Purpose and Duties:

Assists with overall operation and maintenance of a State Park. Performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies and standard operating procedures of the Department. Assumes the responsibilities of the Park Manager in the absence of higher-level employees.

1) Assists with the administrative activities to include, but not limited to, receiving and documenting revenues, preparing reports and making payments in accordance with standard operating procedures.
2) Assists with the operational activities to include supervising specific areas such as retail sales, day use areas, camping, cabins and other overnight accommodations or special use facilities.
3) Provides a variety of office functions related to callers, correspondence, document file and retrieval system, etc.
4) Performs routine maintenance and repair activities on buildings and grounds.
5) Performs continuous public relations activities and assists with educational and recreational programming.
6) Provides assistance to and works to maintain a safe environment for park visitors, to include enforcement of park rules, regulations and policies within established limits and in accordance with Division policy.
7) Practice and promote teamwork within the State Park Service, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.

Requirements

Associate's degree in Park Management or related field with (1) year related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements:

1) Position requires medium to heavy lifting, walking and standing on uneven terrain, crawling and working at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents and other material used in maintaining park facilities and grounds.
2) Knowledge of bookkeeping, merchandising and applicable sales principles and practices. Knowledge of applicable terminology and research practices. Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies and organizational functions. Skill in the operation of a motor vehicle. Ability to effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion according to schedules and goals. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to train other employees. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public. Ability to exercise judgement and discretion in interpreting and applying policies and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
3) Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver's License.

Actual Job Location: Cheraw State Park

Full-time, 40 hours per week rotating schedule including weekends and holidays.
